Donald Trump’s “I couldn’t care less” remark was reported as a preface to saying something he expected would get him in trouble—not as a direct answer that he did not care about mending the political divide. In a September 12, 2025, Fox & Friends exchange, he was asked how the country could “come back together”; he then criticized political radicals, especially those on the left. The distinction matters: the reported sequence is clear, but it cannot establish what Trump privately meant or felt about reconciliation.
What Trump said on Fox & Friends
According to Bailey Richards’s September 13, 2025, report for People, republished by AOL, Trump appeared on Fox & Friends on Friday, September 12. The appearance came three days after Charlie Kirk was fatally shot at an event at Utah Valley University.
Co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked how to “fix this country” and “come back together” amid political tensions. The report quotes Trump beginning his response: “I’ll tell you something that’s going to get me in trouble, but I couldn’t care less.” He then discussed radicals on both the right and the left, calling radicals on the left “the problem” and describing them as “vicious,” “horrible,” and “politically savvy.”
In the wording reported by People, “I couldn’t care less” refers directly to Trump’s lack of concern about getting in trouble for what he was about to say. It was not a direct statement that he did not care whether Americans could reconcile. The headline’s link between the phrase and mending the political divide is an interpretation of the exchange’s context, rather than a separate quotation about his feelings toward unity.

What the report establishes—and what it does not
The account supports the reported question, the quoted opening, and the sequence that followed. It is a secondary report, however, not a primary interview transcript or video. The wording here is therefore attributed to People and AOL; it has not been independently verified against a complete primary record.
- Established by the report: Earhardt asked about fixing the country and coming back together, and Trump followed his opening remark by criticizing radicals on both sides, with particular criticism of the left.
- Not established by that exchange: Trump’s private intent or feelings about reconciliation, whether he had a broader plan to bridge political divisions, or the scale of political division in the country.
That distinction avoids turning a provocative phrase into a broader claim the reported exchange does not directly make.

Trump’s earlier remarks about cross-party ties
The same People report describes remarks Trump made at a dinner with allies on the White House Rose Garden patio on September 5, 2025. He recalled a time when Republicans and Democrats socialized and sometimes received votes across party lines, then contrasted it with the present: “It’s solid blocks one way or the other.” He said that probably should not be the case, floated inviting Democrats to the patio, and expressed uncertainty about whether that would work.
That earlier account adds context to the Fox interview, but it does not prove a sustained effort to bridge divisions. The “20%, 30%” figures in Trump’s remarks were his own description of votes politicians sometimes received from the other party in earlier eras—not a statistic from an identified study or an independently verified measure.
