What Parton shared for her 80th birthday
On January 19, 2026, Parton posted a collection of Instagram photos in a colorful outfit beside a flower-decorated, butterfly-shaped cake marked “80,” ABC News reported. In the days before her birthday, her official website announced a new rendition of “Light of a Clear Blue Morning.” The recording featured Lainey Wilson, Miley Cyrus, Queen Latifah and Reba McEntire, with David Foster on piano and backing vocals from the Christ Church Choir. The release marked the 50th anniversary of Parton writing the song. Her website said net proceeds would benefit pediatric cancer research at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Parton said she had written the song “during a season when I was searching for hope,” adding that its message still felt true 50 years later.
What Parton had said about her health
In September 2025, Parton postponed her Las Vegas residency, citing health challenges and procedures recommended by her doctors. In October, after rumors about her health, she posted a video reassuring fans. The Associated Press later quoted her saying, “I’m not ready to die yet. I don’t think God is through with me. And I ain’t done working.” That was her statement at the time, not a prediction of what would happen later.

On May 4, 2026, the AP reported that Parton had canceled the postponed residency. In a video update, she described problems with her immune and digestive systems and a history of kidney stones. She said her doctors had told her the conditions were treatable and that she was responding well to medication and treatment. These were Parton’s public descriptions, not independently verified diagnoses.
ABC News reported that Parton discussed dizziness and dehydration in a video on August 14 and shared a health statement with People on August 21. Those later updates came after the birthday photos; the January pictures should not be treated as a medical update.

Parton died in Nashville on August 25, 2026, at age 80, according to the announcement on her official website, which gives her dates as January 19, 1946–August 25, 2026. The Associated Press reported that her publicist, Marcel Pariseau, said she died after a brief battle with cancer at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. The cause and circumstances here are attributed to the publicist’s statement as reported by the AP.
The timeline matters: the birthday post documented a celebration in January, while her health comments and the announcement of her death came later. Neither the photos nor her earlier reassurance can establish what her condition was at any particular point beyond what she and her representatives publicly said.
