After her husband, Carl Dean, died, Dolly Parton said the hardest part was learning to make new plans. “You just kind of have to learn to kind of make new plans — but that’s the hardest part,” she told the Associated Press in an interview published May 28, 2025. Her remarks were a personal account of grief, not a rule for how others experience it.

What did Dolly Parton say was the hardest part after her husband died?

Parton said adjusting to life without Dean meant learning to make new plans. Asked whether losing her husband had changed what she hoped to accomplish, she described how memories of him and the things they had done and built together remained part of her life. The AP interview presents that adjustment in the context of their shared history, rather than as a simple matter of replacing old plans with new ones.

Parton and Dean had been married for nearly 60 years, according to the AP. Dean died in March 2025 at age 82.

How did Parton describe staying connected to Dean?

Parton spoke of seeing Dean in her memories and in what they had shared. She also said her faith helped sustain her and that she believed she would see him again. These were her own reflections and beliefs; they should not be taken as a universal account of bereavement.

In earlier comments reported by the Los Angeles Times on March 20, 2025, Parton spoke about missing Dean and having to relearn routines. That earlier reporting offers context for the later interview’s focus on making new plans.

When were the remarks made?

The Associated Press published the interview on May 28, 2025, about two months after Dean’s death. The AP’s interview is the primary source for Parton’s words. The Independent’s May 28, 2025 report also recounted her comments.

There is an important later update: the AP reported that Parton died at age 80 in August 2026. Her comments about life after Dean’s death are therefore a historical account from 2025, not a current interview or statement.
