Disney’s old FastPass system gave way to a series of changes, not a simple rename. Disney Genie offered free itinerary-planning suggestions in the My Disney Experience app, while the separate paid Genie+ service provided access to Lightning Lane entrances. Since July 24, 2024, Lightning Lane Multi Pass has replaced Genie+, and Lightning Lane Single Pass has replaced individual Lightning Lane entry. Disney also offers Lightning Lane Premier Pass. Traditional standby lines remain available.
What happened to Disney FastPass?
Disney moved from the legacy FastPass system to app-based planning and paid Lightning Lane options. The available official sources do not establish the exact date FastPass or FastPass+ ended, so it is more accurate to describe the change as a sequence than to assign it a specific retirement date.
In August 2021, then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek described Disney Genie as a forthcoming digital service to help visitors navigate the parks. By November 2021, Disney’s earnings-call transcript indicated that Walt Disney World guests were already upgrading to Genie+. Those sources establish the broad rollout period, but not the exact FastPass shutdown or Genie+ launch date.
Is Disney Genie the same as Genie+?
No. Disney Genie was the complimentary itinerary-planning feature in the My Disney Experience app. Genie+ was a separate paid service for access to Lightning Lane entrances at selected attractions. The names were related, but the products served different purposes.

What replaced Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane entry?
For park visits beginning July 24, 2024, Disney replaced Genie+ with Lightning Lane Multi Pass and individual Lightning Lane entry with Lightning Lane Single Pass. Disney’s current official description also lists Lightning Lane Premier Pass as another option.
| Option | What it offers | Planning and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning Lane Multi Pass | Access to selected experiences through Lightning Lane entrances. | Choose up to three experiences and arrival windows in one park before the visit. After redeeming the first selection, you may choose another experience, subject to availability. Park Hopper benefits may allow later selections in another park, also subject to availability. |
| Lightning Lane Single Pass | Access to certain high-demand attractions not offered through Multi Pass. | Up to two Single Passes per day, subject to availability. |
| Lightning Lane Premier Pass | One-time entry to each available Lightning Lane experience in one park for one day. | No arrival windows to schedule; quantities are limited. |
Disney does not guarantee that a particular attraction will be offered or available on a given date. Check the app for the attraction list and availability for your visit.
How to buy and use Lightning Lane passes
- Check your purchase window. Eligible Disney Resort hotel and select hotel guests can buy up to seven days before their stay, for the length of the stay up to 14 days. Other guests generally have a three-day advance window. The purchase window begins at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time on the first eligible day.
- Open My Disney Experience. Buy passes in the app and review the live prices, available attractions and arrival windows for your park date. Multi Pass and Premier Pass prices vary by park and date; Single Pass prices vary by attraction and date.
- Make your selections. For Multi Pass, select up to three experiences and arrival windows in one park before your visit. Any later selections depend on availability and, where applicable, Park Hopper benefits.
- Redeem at the Lightning Lane entrance. Use a linked MagicBand, MagicBand+, Disney MagicMobile pass, Key to the World Card or ticket card.
Disney says passes are nonrefundable and nontransferable. Because prices, terms, attraction lists and availability can change, use the app to confirm the details for the specific visit date rather than relying on a fixed price or a promised ride selection.

Yes. Disney’s official FAQ says traditional standby lines remain available for attractions and experiences. Lightning Lane passes are paid options for eligible experiences, not a requirement to enter the parks or ride attractions.
