She learned Water Breathing and passed Final Selection; afterward, fear kept her from returning to battle. These ten canon-grounded details explain what she does instead, how she treats the people in her care, and why Kanao matters to her.
Who is Aoi Kanzaki?
1. She belongs to the Demon Slayer Corps
Aoi is a Corps member who works at the Butterfly Mansion, Shinobu Kocho’s residence. Her formal status and her day-to-day role are different: she is a slayer, but she mainly supports the Corps from the mansion rather than taking on missions. The official anime character listing identifies her as a Corps member working at Shinobu’s residence.
2. Her work is based at the Butterfly Mansion
The mansion is both Shinobu’s home and a place where injured Demon Slayers receive support. Aoi’s connection to it places her among the people helping slayers after they return from missions, rather than at the front of those missions.
Why doesn’t Aoi fight demons?
3. She learned Water Breathing
Aoi trained in Water Breathing. That establishes that she learned a Breathing Style, but it does not establish which specific forms she uses, so it would be misleading to assign her particular techniques.

4. She passed Final Selection
Aoi survived Final Selection and became a Corps member. Her survival matters: she was not simply an outsider who never trained or qualified to join.
5. She says fear stopped her from fighting
Aoi describes herself as someone who survived Selection by luck and became too frightened to go fight afterward. The Japanese line reproduced by Magmix is: “選別でも運良く生き残っただけ その後は恐ろしくて戦いにいけなくなった腰抜けなので”. Magmix glosses it in English as, “I only survived the Selection by luck. After that I was too scared to go fight, so I’m a coward.” This is Aoi’s own severe judgment of herself, not an objective assessment of her skill or worth.
What does Aoi do at the Butterfly Mansion?
6. She helps care for injured slayers
Aoi’s support work includes tending to Corps members recovering from injuries. The mansion’s work is practical and ongoing: recovery requires care after a mission, not just a return to combat.
7. She helps with rehabilitation and household work
Her duties also include rehabilitation training, laundry, and cooking. The mix of care, training, and domestic tasks makes her contribution broader than simply looking after patients.

8. She is a demanding rehabilitation instructor
When Tanjiro undergoes functional recovery training, Aoi supervises him firmly. Magmix’s account also notes her notable physical ability during the training. Her strictness should not be confused with inability: she can be forceful and capable even though she avoids demon-fighting missions.
How does Aoi treat the other slayers?
9. She speaks bluntly to Zenitsu and Inosuke
Aoi is direct and strict with Zenitsu and Inosuke, and does not indulge their disruptive behavior while they are at the mansion. That fits her role as someone responsible for keeping recovery and training on track.

10. She has a close, sisterly bond with Kanao
Aoi wanted a younger sister, and she grows close to Kanao Tsuyuri. Their bond becomes important when Tengen Uzui seeks female Corps members for the Entertainment District mission: Kanao intervenes to keep Aoi from being taken along, and the boys volunteer instead. Magmix associates this episode with manga volume 9; the detail comes from its account of the story, not the official character listing.
