Demolition—Ax and Smash—won the World Tag Team Championship from Strike Force at WrestleMania IV on March 27, 1988. WWE’s sources disagree by one day on the length of their first reign: its title-history table lists 477 days, while WWE’s profile and Hall of Fame announcement call it 478 days. The Brain Busters ended the run.
How Demolition won the championship
At WrestleMania IV on March 27, 1988, Ax and Smash defeated Strike Force—Tito Santana and Rick Martel—to become World Tag Team Champions. WWE’s title-history table records the reign as running through July 18, 1989, and labels it 477 days. WWE’s Demolition profile and its 2026 Hall of Fame announcement instead describe the reign as 478 days. Those are WWE’s two published counts; the dates and the one-day discrepancy are worth keeping together rather than treating either count as a settled correction.
Who ended the run?
The Brain Busters—Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson—ended Ax and Smash’s first reign on July 18, 1989, according to WWE’s 2008 Demolition feature. The outcome closed a long uninterrupted stretch at the top of WWE’s tag-team division.
How the run fits Demolition’s championship history
The celebrated 1988–89 record belongs specifically to Ax and Smash. WWE’s 2008 feature counts three Demolition title reigns at a combined 698 days. It distinguishes a later reign, after Demolition regained the championship at WrestleMania VI, when Crush joined the group and a rule allowed any two members to defend the titles. That group-era total should not be confused with the first reign’s duration.

WWE places Demolition among a deep late-1980s tag division that included the British Bulldogs, the Hart Foundation, the Rockers, the Powers of Pain and the Legion of Doom. The same history also notes a best-of-three title match between the Hart Foundation and Demolition at SummerSlam 1990, illustrating that Demolition’s story continued beyond the record-setting first reign.
How long did the record stand?
WWE says Demolition’s record stood for 28 years before The New Day’s 484-day tenure in 2015–16 surpassed it. That comparison is WWE’s framing of its own tag-team championship history, not a claim about every wrestling promotion or tag-team title worldwide.
