Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai is Nakul Singh Sawhney’s Hindi documentary about the September 2013 violence in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts of western Uttar Pradesh, and the upheaval that followed. It follows the consequences for survivors and displaced residents while connecting local social fractures and resistance to political rhetoric and the 2014 general-election campaign. Those connections are the film’s interpretation, not a neutral finding established by the event listings that describe it.

What the documentary covers

The film looks beyond the violence itself to its aftermath: displacement, the altered relationships among communities, and the social and economic pressures facing people in the affected districts. The Mumbai International Film Festival catalogue describes it as linking the violence and its consequences with resistance and the 2014 election campaign. Columbia’s programme likewise frames it around the violence, displacement and political context.

Harvard’s South Asia Institute event description says the film addresses gender, caste, class, Hindutva, political rhetoric and local resistance. That is a university programme description, not an independent review. Its themes help explain the documentary’s wider scope, but the film’s account of responsibility and political motive should be understood as Sawhney’s and the film’s analysis.

What the film says about the 2013 violence

The documentary concerns the September 2013 violence in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli. Harvard’s 2016 event description says more than 100 people were killed and over 80,000 displaced; Columbia’s 2015–16 programme gives a similar but not identical formulation, saying more than 100 were killed and close to 80,000 displaced. These are figures published in institutional event descriptions, not a reconciled statistical series. They establish the scale the institutions associated with the film, but should not be treated as a single definitive count.

The documentary advances an interpretation of how the violence and its aftermath related to local social divisions and the politics surrounding the 2014 election. Sawhney has described his own aim in an interview with Sahapedia: “The film lays bare the various social, political and economic aspects around the massacre.” That is the filmmaker’s account of the project, rather than independent verification of every political claim in the film.

Who made it, and how long is it?

Nakul Singh Sawhney directed and produced the documentary. Listings vary slightly on its date and running time, so there is no single uncontested figure across the cited records.

Record Year listed Runtime Language information
Mumbai International Film Festival catalogue 2015; listed as India/2015 136 minutes Hindi
Columbia University South Asia Institute programme, 2015–16 2014 135 minutes Hindi with English subtitles

The year difference reflects how those two records list the film; it does not by itself establish a definitive release date. Columbia’s entry is useful if you need to know whether its listed screening was subtitled.

Where can you watch it?

The available institutional records document historical screenings, including events with the director, but do not establish where the film can be streamed today or whether a physical edition is currently for sale. Harvard’s South Asia Institute listed a screening and discussion with Sawhney on March 10, 2016; Columbia also listed a screening in its 2015–16 programme. The India Foundation for the Arts recorded a screening followed by a director discussion in its 2015–16 report. These past events are not evidence of current availability or screening-license terms.

Why was a screening disrupted?

In his Sahapedia interview, Sawhney recounts a disruption of a 2015 screening at Delhi University from his perspective. His account is a filmmaker’s recollection, not an independently established account of every participant’s motives. The available event descriptions establish the film’s screening and discussion history, but do not independently resolve the circumstances of that disruption.

How to read the film’s political argument

Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai is a documentary with an interpretive argument, not simply a chronology of events. Its focus on survivors, displacement, social relations and election-season politics makes it useful for understanding how Sawhney frames the aftermath. For claims about responsibility, political strategy or the causes of the violence, distinguish what the documentary argues from what its institutional event listings establish.
