Belinda’s clear priorities and willingness to act give the adventure a strong new centre, even as its succession of twists sometimes leaves too little room for their consequences to land. The episode premiered on 12 April 2025, written by Russell T Davies and directed by Peter Hoar.
Who is Belinda Chandra?
Belinda is a nurse at a London hospital and the new companion introduced in “The Robot Revolution.” Sethu gives her a grounded, self-possessed presence: Belinda is not simply swept along by the Doctor’s adventure, but keeps making her own decisions about what matters and what she is willing to risk.
Her nursing work matters to the story. When the rebellion’s people are hurt, she tends to them; when their situation demands a choice, she takes responsibility rather than waiting for the Doctor to decide. That combination makes her arrival feel like a character introduction, not just a new face placed inside a familiar format.
Sethu previously played Mundy Flynn in “Boom.” Mundy and Belinda are separate characters; the episode connects them through Belinda’s descendant, rather than presenting Belinda as the same person.

What happens in “The Robot Revolution”?
Spoilers for the episode’s setup and main turns.
The story begins 17 years before its present-day action. Alan Budd gives Belinda a certificate that claims a star has been named after her. In the present, two red robots arrive at Belinda’s home, identify themselves with the star system of Missbelindachandra, and abduct her. The Doctor follows in the TARDIS.
A time fracture separates their arrivals. Belinda lands in a futuristic city during a civil war, where robots rule over the local population. The Doctor reached the planet six months earlier and has joined the rebellion. Its robotic overlord, the Great A.I. Generator, plans to merge with Belinda in pursuit of peace. The matching certificates and the Doctor’s account of the planet’s history draw Alan and the fracture into the conflict.

Belinda’s choices help move the story rather than merely decorate it: she asks for Alan, and later offers herself to the robots to protect the rebels. The official synopsis describes the Doctor and Belinda using their two certificates to create a paradox; he rescues her, and the robot war ends. The episode also brings a cost to the rebellion with the loss of Sasha 55.
Belinda gives the adventure its strongest point of view
The episode’s most appealing idea is that Belinda has a life and a sense of purpose that do not vanish when the TARDIS arrives. Her first priority is not to become a space traveller; it is to get home. The line “Doctor, I told you – get me home!” captures that insistence without making her seem unadventurous. She has been pulled into a crisis, and she expects the Doctor to take her wishes seriously.

That resistance to being patronised gives the Doctor and Belinda a useful dynamic from the start. The episode lets her act on her own judgment, particularly through her care for the wounded and her willingness to put herself at risk. Sethu’s introduction is strongest in those moments: Belinda feels capable and compassionate without the story needing to make her instantly at home in the Doctor’s world.
The pace is exciting—and crowded
There is plenty to propel the episode forward: an abduction, an unfamiliar planet, a divided timeline, a rebellion, a robot overlord, Alan’s connection to the mystery and a paradox built from the certificates. The briskness gives the adventure momentum, but it also means that several turns arrive before the previous ones have had much time to settle.

That trade-off is central to the episode’s appeal and its limitation. Belinda’s decisions are easy to follow, while the emotional consequences around the rebellion, including Sasha 55’s loss, have less room to resonate. Daniel Cooper’s Engadget review, published on 12 April 2025, likewise judged the story overstuffed and compared its pace to moving through a movie’s worth of plot at fast-forward. That is one reviewer’s assessment, but it identifies the pressure point: the episode has more ideas than it can fully develop at the speed it chooses.

After the Doctor rescues Belinda and the robot war ends, he invites her to travel with him. She declines because she wants to return home. The TARDIS cannot land on Earth on the date she left, turning her practical demand into the episode’s cliffhanger. It is an effective closing complication because it grows from Belinda’s own priorities rather than overriding them: she has said what she wants, and now the Doctor has to confront why he cannot simply deliver it.

As a debut, “The Robot Revolution” succeeds most clearly in establishing that Belinda will be an active companion with a point of view of her own. Its adventure is energetic and its central character is promising; its crowded plotting keeps some of the danger and loss from landing as deeply as they might.
