Denis Villeneuve ended Dune: Part Two where Paul’s private transformation becomes an open rupture: Chani leaves, and the conflict Paul has set in motion is still ahead. Villeneuve said he wanted the ending to convey events spiraling out of control, betrayal and tragedy—not to add a comforting stretch of closure. Chani’s departure is also the film’s final point of view, turning Paul’s ascent into a cautionary tale.

Villeneuve wanted the ending to stop at the point of rupture

Asked whether he considered giving the film more closure, Villeneuve told io9/Gizmodo that he wanted to preserve the abruptness of Frank Herbert’s novel’s ending. The film, he said, needed to bring home the sense that events had become uncontrollable, along with their betrayal and tragedy. “I had to finish there,” he said, adding that he was “100% certain” this was the best way to end it and calling it “a strong statement.”

That makes the ending emotionally decisive without resolving the conflict. Paul has chosen a path with consequences; the film stops as those consequences begin to widen, rather than showing them settled. The open plot is part of the point: the audience is left with the shock of the turn, not reassured that it can be neatly contained.

Why Chani gets the final point of view

Chani’s departure was not an incidental final beat. Villeneuve told io9/Gizmodo that the idea for her last shot came early in screenplay writing and that he was sure it was the right image to finish on. The shot makes the personal cost of Paul’s choice visible at the same moment his political rise gathers force.

In a PopEntertainment interview posted January 25, 2025, Villeneuve explained that he gave Chani an independent agenda and wanted her to become “a moral compass at the end, so the movie would be perceived as a cautionary tale.” He described her as the audience’s point of view on the journey Paul is embracing—and as a way to show that it is the wrong one. Her reaction therefore does more than register heartbreak: it challenges the triumphant meaning Paul’s rise might otherwise seem to have.

What the final sequence says—and what it leaves unresolved

The published screenplay’s sequence makes the tension concrete. Chani revives Paul with her tears and embraces him; after he wakes, she slaps him and leaves. Later, Paul says he has seen that she will understand. But the film’s final image remains her departure, not a reconciliation.

That contrast supports an interpretation of the ending: Paul’s confidence about what Chani may understand later does not undo the separation we see now, or the cost of the choice that caused it. It is an interpretation of the scene, not a claim that Villeneuve said every viewer must read it in the same way. The screenplay records the action; Villeneuve’s interviews explain the intended emphasis.

How the film’s ending differs from simply repeating the novel

Villeneuve’s explanation is not merely that he copied Herbert’s ending. He said he wanted the corrective view of Paul’s choices associated with Herbert’s later novel Dune Messiah to register clearly in the film. Giving Chani a stronger independent perspective is one of his adaptation choices for making that warning legible within Part Two.

Dune: Part Two [Blu-ray] (2024)
  • Denis Villeneuve returns to direct this second instalment of the adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel.

The distinction matters: the novel and film do not present Chani identically, and the director’s statements describe his aims for the adaptation, not a universal interpretation of either work. For Villeneuve, Chani’s final departure helps keep Paul’s ascent from reading as an uncomplicated victory.

The short answer

Villeneuve ended the film there because he wanted its last movement to land as a strong, unsettling statement: events out of control, a betrayal, and a tragedy still unfolding. Chani’s departure makes that argument personal, and her perspective frames Paul’s rise as a caution rather than a triumph.
