Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington married in 2004, had twins in 2007, and went through divorce proceedings that began in 2012, resumed in 2016, and were finalized in 2018. A 2026 report describes a new petition concerning child support, but does not establish how the court ruled. The public record documents those events; it does not explain the couple’s private reasons.

How their relationship unfolded

Marriage and children

Quaid and Buffington married in 2004. Their twins, Thomas and Zoe, were born in 2007. These dates are reported in a later relationship timeline (Us Weekly).

The first divorce filing in 2012

In March 2012, Buffington filed a divorce petition. CBS News quoted the petition’s stated ground: “The marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities … that destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationship and prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation.” That is language from the filing, not a direct statement by either spouse or an independently established account of what happened privately (CBS News).

A representative was quoted as saying, “We can confirm that Kimberley Quaid has filed for divorce. Contrary to what has been reported, a satisfactory settlement is being worked out for both parties. We will not be providing any further information on this private matter.” The statement reflects the representative’s account at the time; CBS reported that the papers were later withdrawn (CBS News; Los Angeles Times).

A new proceeding in 2016

In 2016, Buffington filed for dissolution of the marriage in Los Angeles Superior Court. The couple’s joint announcement cited “irreconcilable differences,” according to the Los Angeles Times. That phrase records the stated basis for the proceeding; it does not reveal the full private circumstances or establish a particular cause (Los Angeles Times).

Divorce finalized in 2018

A later timeline account says the divorce was finalized in 2018 (Us Weekly).

What the 2026 child-support report says

In 2026, Us Weekly reported that Quaid petitioned to end child-support payments under the 2018 agreement as the twins approached high-school graduation age. This is a reported filing, not confirmation that payments ended or that a judge approved a change. The available report does not establish the petition’s final court outcome (Us Weekly).

What the public record can—and cannot—tell us

The filings and contemporaneous coverage establish a sequence of legal events and the grounds stated in those filings or announcements. They do not, by themselves, establish why the couple separated, whether or how they reconciled between proceedings, or what either spouse privately experienced. The public material cited here does not provide a detailed account of those matters, so claims about motives or a single explanation would go beyond what it documents.
