Soz: A Ballad of Maladies is a documentary about how artists and musicians in Kashmir use creative work to engage with political upheaval and its social costs. The 2016 film’s description as “sadly well-timed” belongs to the moment of its release: it was completed before the unrest discussed in the contemporary review, not made in response to it.

What is Soz: A Ballad of Maladies about?

Directed by Tushar Madhav and Sarvnik Kaur, Soz: A Ballad of Maladies follows cultural practitioners whose work reflects life in a region marked by political conflict. The Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT) describes a portrait spanning folk, rock, and hip-hop, with attention to collective memory, historical expression, and emerging voices of resistance.

A 2016 Scroll.in review and interview describes a wider range of expression: poems, writing, ballads, music, visual art, and cartoons. The people it identifies include poet and writer Zareef Ahmad Zareef, artist Showkat Katju, rock band Parvaaz, hip-hop artist MC Kash, and cartoonist Mir Suhail. The film’s focus is not art as an escape from politics, but the ways creative work can register dissent, memory, and social experience.

Why was the film called “sadly well-timed”?

The phrase comes from the Scroll.in article published on September 20, 2016. Its timing refers to the events and atmosphere discussed in that review, not to a claim that the filmmakers anticipated them or made the film in response. According to the article, filming began in December 2013, continued in phases through August 2015, and the documentary was completed before the 2016 unrest covered in the piece.

The production story began with music. In the interview, Madhav and Kaur said they first heard about an annual Battle of Bands concert organized by the Central Reserve Police Force at a venue that had been closed as a military garrison for almost two decades. They saw the concert as a way to explore the politics of music; the project then expanded from musicians to include visual artists and cartoonists. The filmmakers also described the challenge of earning participants’ trust, including people who chose not to appear, and said the filming took place amid persistent tension during the 2013–2015 production period.

How does art function as protest in the documentary?

The film brings together forms that can carry political meaning in different ways: songs and ballads, poetry and writing, visual art, and cartoons. In the Scroll.in interview, the filmmakers said the central message was that “conflict cannot subsume all.” They also cautioned against reducing the conflict to religious divisions, saying, “Pointing fingers at religious polarities in Kashmir is a very simplistic way of looking and understanding the conflict.” Both statements are the filmmakers’ perspective as reported in that 2016 interview.

That framing helps explain why the documentary moves beyond a single genre or political voice. Its subjects use cultural work to express criticism, preserve memory, and make room for experiences that a conflict-only narrative can obscure. The film’s premise is that political upheaval matters deeply, but does not erase the people and creative practices that continue alongside it.
