Moore said that, for roughly the four years leading up to her May 2024 interview, she had been questioning where to put her energy and reflecting on her ability, value, and place in the industry. She also said she had not found a role as dynamic as the one in The Substance—a project she could “dive into and sink [her] teeth into.”

She made the distinction explicit: “It’s not like I ever officially left, but I understand the sentiment and appreciate it.” The quote and account of her interview with Entertainment Weekly, published May 23, 2024, were reported by Us Weekly the following day. The reporting does not establish that Moore formally announced a retirement or stopped acting altogether.
How this differs from her earlier sabbatical
Moore had taken an earlier break from film work after the 1997 releases of G.I. Jane and Deconstructing Harry. Us Weekly reported that she used that sabbatical to spend time with her children; she later returned to film work, including Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and Margin Call.

That earlier sabbatical and her later questioning of whether to continue acting are separate events. The 2024 account describes uncertainty about her future, not another announced break.
Why The Substance mattered to her
The Substance, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, is a horror thriller about an aging actress who uses a black-market drug to create a younger version of herself. Moore connected the film’s themes to aging, rejection, and the search for validation. She described the part as unusually dynamic; the account does not establish that the film alone caused her doubts to end or rescued her career.

The later award recognition
In January 2025, Moore won the Golden Globe for female actor in a motion picture musical or comedy for The Substance. In her acceptance speech, she said she had worked for more than 45 years and had not previously won an acting award, according to AARP. The career-duration figure is Moore’s own description, as reported by AARP, rather than an independently compiled statistic.
