Disney confirmed on January 15, 2026, that Dave Filoni became Lucasfilm’s President and Chief Creative Officer as Kathleen Kennedy stepped down from studio leadership and returned to full-time producing. Filoni is not leading alone: Lynwen Brennan became Co-President, and both report to Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman.
What changed at Lucasfilm
Disney’s announcement describes a leadership transition, not Kennedy’s departure from the company. She stepped down from Lucasfilm leadership after nearly 14 years at its helm and returned to full-time producing. The announcement named The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter among her producing work.

Filoni’s formal title is President and Chief Creative Officer. Brennan became Co-President. Disney said the two report to Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman. Lucasfilm’s current leadership listing confirms Filoni and Brennan in those roles.
| Person | Role after the transition | What the announcement says |
|---|---|---|
| Kathleen Kennedy | Full-time producer | Stepped down from Lucasfilm leadership; producing work includes The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter. |
| Dave Filoni | President and Chief Creative Officer | Shares the studio’s leadership structure with Brennan; both report to Alan Bergman. |
| Lynwen Brennan | Co-President | Shares Lucasfilm’s top leadership with Filoni; both report to Alan Bergman. |
Why Filoni’s appointment fits his Lucasfilm background
Filoni’s path at Lucasfilm is closely tied to animation and television. His official biography says George Lucas selected him in 2005 to help build the company’s animation studio. Filoni went on to work on series including Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
#1 Best Overall
Lucasfilm’s biography says The Clone Wars ran for seven seasons and more than 100 episodes and won four Emmy Awards. Those are career milestones, not evidence of what the new leadership will prioritize or how future projects will perform.
What the announcement does—and does not—tell fans
The transition makes Filoni a central creative leader while Brennan serves as Co-President. It does not establish a new film schedule, a change in announced projects, or a specific creative strategy. Disney’s announcement described Filoni’s collaboration with Jon Favreau on The Mandalorian and Grogu, but the leadership news alone is not a basis for predicting what Lucasfilm will make next.

The announcement-era release date for The Mandalorian and Grogu was May 22, 2026. That date has passed; the January announcement does not establish the film’s actual release status, so it should not be treated as a current schedule update.

In contemporaneous Associated Press reporting, Kennedy reflected on her appointment by saying: “When George Lucas asked me to take over Lucasfilm upon his retirement, I couldn’t have imagined what lay ahead.” The Associated Press report covered her step back from studio leadership and return to producing.
