Darius Rucker and Beth Leonard announced their separation in July 2020 after nearly 20 years of marriage. Their joint statement did not give a reason for the split. In later interviews, Rucker reflected on the marriage while discussing his memoir and said he wanted to take responsibility for his part in its breakdown. His October 2023 comment that the divorce was not yet official describes the status at that time; the available reports do not establish its current legal status.

Rucker and Leonard said they had decided to separate after “much reflection.” In the joint statement reported by ABC News on July 13, 2020, they described themselves as “close friends and parenting partners” and said they would remain each other’s “biggest cheerleaders.” Rucker added that their family would always be their priority.

The announcement did not explain why they separated. ABC News reported at the time that the reason was unknown, so the public statements do not support a definitive account of what caused the relationship to end.
When they met, married and separated
- 1998: Rucker and Leonard met, according to ABC News.
- December 9, 2000: They married.
- July 2020: They jointly announced their separation.
The timeline establishes the length of their marriage before the announcement, but it does not add a reason for the split.

What Rucker said about the divorce and his family
In an interview published by PEOPLE, carried by Yahoo Entertainment on October 5, 2023, Rucker said the divorce was not yet official. He also described the split as painful and said the family remained a family. That is a dated account of what he said in 2023, not confirmation of the couple’s legal status today.
What he later said about his part in the marriage’s end
While discussing his memoir, Life’s Too Short: A Memoir by Darius Rucker, Rucker appeared on Tamron Hall’s show in June 2024. In a report published by Talking With Tami on June 7, 2024, he said writing about the end of the marriage was difficult and that he wanted to be truthful about his own conduct. The report quotes him saying, “I want to tell the truth, but sometimes the truth sucks. It sucks for me and then writing about her, I just wanted the world to know that it was all me. She was awesome. It was all me.”

The cited reports establish that Rucker said in October 2023 that the divorce was not yet official. They do not establish whether it has since been legally finalized. Without a more recent, reliable confirmation, it would be inaccurate to present either outcome as current fact.
