The film’s central challenge is making its social concerns feel rooted in these characters and this campus. A contemporaneous review of its Tamil counterpart, Por, argues that the project’s many issues and stylistic flourishes can overwhelm that grounding. That is a useful critical lens, though not a scene-by-scene verdict on the Hindi version.
What is Dange about?
Released in Hindi in 2024, Dange is a campus drama directed by Bejoy Nambiar. Netflix’s synopsis frames the story around Xavier and Yuva, former friends who become adversaries when their student cohorts clash during an annual cultural festival. BookMyShow’s synopsis describes the conflict escalating into a campus riot that a political party hopes to exploit.

That setup gives the film two connected arenas: the personal rupture between its leads and the wider contest over student power. The dramatic opportunity is to show how an old friendship turns into a public rivalry—and how political actors can use that division. The critical question is whether the film develops those connections with enough specificity.
Does its student-politics story feel grounded?
The most pointed criticism comes from Sowmya Rajendran’s March 3, 2024 review of Por, the Tamil counterpart filmed simultaneously with Dange using a different cast. Rajendran wrote: “A film about student politics needs to be rooted. It needs cultural specificity.” She saw the film as bringing forward several social issues without exploring its social agenda sufficiently.

That reservation speaks directly to the premise of Dange: student politics is more compelling when it emerges from the characters’ relationships, campus culture and local stakes, rather than functioning as a backdrop for a succession of confrontations. Rajendran was reviewing Por, not separately assessing every element of the Hindi cut, so her criticism is best understood as a lens on the shared project rather than a definitive account of how Dange handles each scene.
Do the film’s style and themes work together?
In her review of Por, Rajendran points to split screens, references to older films, handheld and tracking shots, and forceful background music. She describes an action-film approach that sits uneasily beside an earnest but insufficiently explored social agenda. For viewers considering Dange, that raises a useful question: do the visual and sound choices sharpen the tension between the former friends and their campus, or do they add more noise to a story already carrying several issues?

The available criticism supports that question, but not a full comparison of the two versions’ scenes, performances or dialogue. They are related productions, not identical cuts: each has its own cast and language-specific performances.
How is Dange related to Por?
Dange is the Hindi version of a project filmed simultaneously with the Tamil Por, with a different cast. That production link makes Por relevant context, but it does not make one version a substitute for the other. Their dialogue and performances differ, and the cited review evaluates Por rather than supplying a comprehensive side-by-side judgment.
