The episode is a retrospective documentary, not independent medical reporting.
What is the episode, and what does it cover?
VICE identifies “Mick Foley: Hell in a Cell” as Season 6, Episode 1, with a listed runtime of 44 minutes. Its description says Foley revisits the 1998 match moment by moment, from the fall off the cage to the bout’s continuing impact. VICE’s episode listing
VICE announced that Season 6 would premiere on March 25, 2025, with 10 episodes. The announcement says the opener includes an extensive new interview with Foley and reflections from his family on wrestling’s physical and mental effects. VICE’s Season 6 announcement
What happened in the match?
The Undertaker faced Mankind, Foley’s character, at King of the Ring on June 28, 1998. WWE’s retrospective account says The Undertaker won. It recounts Foley falling from the cell onto the announce table, climbing back onto the roof, then being chokeslammed through the cell and into the ring before the match ended with a Tombstone. Why distinguish the two falls?
The fall onto the announce table
The first fall is often the image people recall when they ask Foley whether it hurt going through the table. It was a shocking moment, but it was not the end of the sequence: Foley returned to the roof, where the second fall followed.
The fall through the cell roof
In WWE’s oral history, Foley said the fall through the roof was not part of his plan and that it knocked him unconscious. “My vision did not include the cage breaking,” he said. He also recalled a broken tooth, another tooth being knocked out and put back, and pain that lasted for months. These are Foley’s retrospective statements, not a medical diagnosis independently established by the episode. WWE’s oral history of Hell in a Cell

What did people at ringside recall?
The oral history conveys concern as well as the match’s continuation. Referee Tim White recalled that Foley said he was good to go after the first fall, after which the bout continued. Sgt. Slaughter remembered concern about Foley’s shoulder and arranging medical access. These accounts describe what witnesses recalled; they do not establish a complete medical assessment of Foley during the match.
Announcer Jim Ross later described his reaction to the moment: “What you heard was not a predetermined, scripted line.” The comment helps explain why the sequence felt so alarming to viewers, but it should not be taken to mean every element of the match was unplanned. What does the episode add to the familiar footage?
The familiar footage makes the match legible as a sequence of escalating stunts. The episode’s stated focus on Foley’s later reflections and his family’s perspective shifts attention toward what the spectacle cost and how it affected those close to him. Foley’s WWE oral-history account says his family was shaken by the match and that it became a turning point in how he approached his character. That is his account of its personal and professional significance, rather than proof of a broader medical conclusion.
Foley also reflected on how close the consequences could have been: “Mine easily could have ended that night in Pittsburgh.” The line captures the risk as he understood it in retrospect; it is not a claim that the episode independently measures the danger.
