Dabba Cartel Review: A Crowded Crime Drama on Netflix

Netflix’s Dabba Cartel links a five-woman tiffin business in Thane to drug peddling and a fictional pharma investigation. Here are the premise, cast, episode count and what the available evidence can—and cannot—say about its “overcooked” verdict.

Dabba Cartel has an arresting setup: five women’s Mumbai-suburb tiffin business becomes entangled with drug peddling and an investigation into a pharmaceutical company. But the ingredients do not automatically make a satisfying crime drama. Netflix’s premise and episode summaries establish the show’s ambitions; they cannot settle whether its two storylines or ensemble ultimately cohere.

What is Dabba Cartel about?

Set in Thane, in the Mumbai suburbs, the seven-episode Netflix drama follows five women whose dabba business, Raji’s Kitchen, becomes tangled in drug peddling and an investigation involving fictional pharmaceutical company VivaLife. Netflix’s series listing frames those threads as parallel parts of the story: a local food venture on one side and a pharma-linked criminal investigation on the other.

That is a deliberately crowded premise, and it gives the title’s “overcooked” description a clear question to answer: do the women’s business, the cartel plot and the investigation build one another up, or do they compete for space? The available official summaries establish the setup, not a verdict on the writing, pacing or performances. A fair review should not present the label as an independently verified assessment of the finished series.

Is the VivaLife pharma scandal based on a real case?

Netflix presents Dabba Cartel as a drama and describes VivaLife as part of the fictional plot. The premise is not evidence of a real pharmaceutical scandal, and no real case inspiring the story is established by Netflix’s materials. The show’s references to a drug, trial details and an investigation should be understood as plot elements, not as reporting about an actual company or documented trafficking operation.

How many episodes are there?

Netflix lists seven episodes. The US title page gives the following runtimes, in listing order; it does not provide episode titles in the version accessed:

  • Episode 1: 45 minutes
  • Episode 2: 43 minutes
  • Episode 3: 42 minutes
  • Episode 4: 44 minutes
  • Episode 5: 49 minutes
  • Episode 6: 48 minutes
  • Episode 7: 1 hour 3 minutes

The summaries chart the widening plot: Raji’s Kitchen gets underway, the investigation reaches a breakthrough, and the story brings in a South American drug, VivaLife trial details and a new threat to the cartel. Those are developments in Netflix’s synopsis, not proof that the fictional plot reflects real pharmaceutical practices.

Who made the series, and who is in the cast?

Hitesh Bhatia directed the series. Shibani Akhtar, Vishnu Menon, Gaurav Kapur and Akanksha Seda are credited as creators, while Netflix names Vishnu Menon and Bhavna Kher as writers. Netflix identifies Excel Media and Entertainment LLP as the production company.

The announced cast includes Shabana Azmi, Gajraj Rao, Jyotika, Nimisha Sajayan, Shalini Pandey, Anjali Anand, Sai Tamhankar, Jisshu Sengupta, Lillete Dubey and Bhupendra Singh Jadawat. Netflix’s current listing uses “Jyothika,” while its announcement uses “Jyotika.”

What the premise promises—and what it cannot prove

Creator Shibani Akhtar said the series aimed to explore “the extraordinary journey of ordinary household women” and how resilience, ambition and survival instincts can push them into “unimaginable circumstances.” Director Hitesh Bhatia described it as a crime drama with emotional depth and dynamic characters. These statements, reported in Netflix’s 18 February 2025 trailer announcement, explain the creative intent; they are not independent evidence that the show achieves it.

For a story this busy to work, its strands need to feel causally connected rather than merely adjacent. The dabba enterprise should matter to the characters’ choices, and the VivaLife investigation should deepen the stakes rather than turn into a separate show. Those are the useful tests for the “overcooked” charge. Netflix’s episode summaries show that the series develops both tracks, but summaries alone cannot establish how well the episodes balance them on screen.

Release date and regional rating

Netflix announced Dabba Cartel for 28 February 2025. Its US listing shows a TV-MA rating, while its India page lists U/A 16+, so the maturity label depends on the regional Netflix catalogue. Check the listing for your market for the applicable rating.

What do the audience scores say?

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 64% Tomatometer from 11 reviews and a 73% Popcornmeter with fewer than 50 ratings when accessed on 8 October 2026. These are small, changeable samples, not a broad measure of consensus. They offer context, but they cannot replace an explanation of whether the show’s two crime-story strands and character arcs work together.

Dabba Cartel is built around a distinctive collision of domestic enterprise and pharma-linked crime. Whether that combination feels gripping or overloaded depends on execution—something the official synopsis and a limited rating snapshot cannot establish on their own.
