What happened to Jessica Lyman and Eli Painter?
PEOPLE reported that Lyman, 44, and her son Eli were shot at their Saratoga Springs home on March 28, 2025. Eli was pronounced dead at the scene. Lyman was found critically injured and died two days later. The newly unsealed search warrants were filed on April 18, 2025, and PEOPLE said it obtained them. What did the warrant reporting say about DNA and other forensic evidence?
According to PEOPLE’s account of the warrants, investigators reported genetic material on sheets next to where Lyman had been lying. The account also said a doctor told police he found suspicious genetic material on her. Notes reportedly referred to forensic testing, including serology, DNA and firearm testing. The reporting does not establish the results of those tests or say that the material identified a perpetrator.
PEOPLE also reported that intimate clothing was found in a teenager’s room, along with two BB pistols. These are descriptions of items and allegations in warrant reporting; they do not, on their own, establish who committed the killings or what happened in the home.

What did surveillance footage show about the mask?
PEOPLE’s account of the warrants described neighbor surveillance footage showing an unidentified figure near the home. The figure reportedly exited a gap near the home at about 2:30 a.m. and returned around 3 a.m. Before disappearing from camera view, the person appeared to put on a white mask. Police were quoted as saying no one was captured entering or leaving the gap for the rest of the night.
A white-and-brown mask found in a teenager’s room reportedly resembled the one visible in the footage. The reporting does not identify the person on camera, establish that the figure entered the home, or prove that the mask found in the room was the one worn by the figure.

What did the handwritten notes say?
PEOPLE reported that investigators found a handwritten note reading “This is a murder story” and another note referencing forensic testing. The available account does not establish who wrote either note or what they meant; the wording alone does not establish a motive.
What has been publicly said about the investigation?
PEOPLE quoted a Saratoga Springs Police Department statement saying: “The families of the victims have been extremely cooperative throughout the entire investigation and the Saratoga Springs Police Department remains committed to continue to work closely with them in the pursuit of justice.”
