In a December 2024 interview, Mercer said he hoped one day to give creators with new ideas and perspectives space to tell their stories, while also saying he planned to keep working “till I am withered and gray.”
What did Matt Mercer say about passing the torch?
In an interview published by Yahoo Entertainment on December 1, 2024, Mercer was asked about Critical Role’s legacy as the group approached its 10th anniversary. He described a hope that the company could eventually support a new generation of storytellers: “I hope to one day pass the torch to a bunch of incredible people with new ideas and new perspectives and give them the space to tell their stories.”

He paired that idea with a much more immediate commitment to continuing his own work, saying, “And I plan to be doing this till I am withered and gray.” Read together, the comments point to a possible future in which Critical Role helps other creators build stories of their own—not to an imminent departure, a named successor, or a scheduled handoff.
What kind of legacy did the cast describe?
Mercer framed legacy partly as an organizational responsibility: building a company foundation capable of shepherding creative work beyond the original cast’s own projects. His “distant creative grandparents” image suggests a role that could include encouragement and support while newer storytellers take the lead.

Liam O’Brien described legacy in a more personal, community-centered way: it can live at tables where people approach stories with care. Together, the remarks present Critical Role’s legacy as something that may extend through both the organization it builds and the storytelling practices other people carry forward.
What did Critical Role say it planned for 2025?
The interview also looked ahead to activities the cast described for 2025. These were plans reported in 2024, not confirmation of what ultimately happened or a guide to Critical Role’s 2026 programming.

No transition schedule or successor is identified in the interview. Mercer’s wording describes an aspiration to make room for other storytellers at some point, alongside his stated intention to continue working. The source supports a discussion of long-term creative succession, not a claim that the original cast is stepping aside now.
