What is DAN DA DAN about?
Momo Ayase believes in ghosts but not aliens. Her classmate, who calls himself Okarun, believes in aliens but dismisses ghosts. Each tries to prove the other wrong: Momo heads to a place associated with UFO sightings, while Okarun visits a haunted tunnel. Their encounters make both sides of the argument very real—and set off a chain of occult trouble.

The premise is a clever engine for the show’s genre collisions. An episode can pivot from eerie supernatural imagery to an alien encounter, a fight, a joke or an awkward moment between two teenagers. The romance does not replace the action; it grows alongside it. GKIDS describes the series as a love letter to science fiction and horror with the heart of a teen romantic comedy, while Shueisha characterizes the manga as an occult battle story with romance beginning alongside the action.
Why does it feel like “peak” anime fiction?
It commits to the collision of genres
Many series borrow a single element from horror or science fiction. DAN DA DAN makes their collision its basic premise: ghosts and aliens are both present, and the story can move between them without treating either as a detour. Comedy and romance add different kinds of tension, keeping the supernatural stakes connected to the characters’ everyday lives.

The central relationship gives the spectacle a human scale
Momo and Okarun start by trying to win an argument. Their evolving connection gives the escalating paranormal action an emotional counterweight: alongside the question of what strange force comes next is the quieter question of how these two will understand one another. That balance is a large part of the series’ appeal, and it helps the chaos feel like a story rather than a succession of strange images.
The animation supports the story’s restless energy
Science SARU produced the animation, with Fuga Yamashiro and Abel Gongora credited as directors, Hiroshi Seko on series composition and Kensuke Ushio on music. The official staff page identifies Yukinobu Tatsu as the creator of the original work. Tatsu’s comment on the anime adaptation is simple: “Please accept my thanks for creating an anime version of DAN DA DAN.”

Calling the series “peak” is ultimately a personal judgment, not a documented consensus or a claim that it outranks every other anime. A fair way to assess it is to ask whether its visual energy, shifts among action, horror, science fiction and comedy, paranormal premise, and central relationship work for you. If that combination sounds exciting rather than exhausting, the show is an unusually direct match.

Where can you watch DAN DA DAN?
GKIDS lists Crunchyroll, Hulu and Netflix on its series page. That is not a guarantee that every season is available on every service in every country: streaming rights and catalogs vary by territory and can change. Check the local catalog and season listings before subscribing.
What rating does it have?
VIZ lists DAN DA DAN as TV-MA in its Americas & Oceania rights entry. That is the rating shown for that particular listing, not a universal classification; age ratings can differ by country and service.

Should you watch the anime or start with the manga?
Choose the anime if you want the story’s genre shifts, action and comedy delivered through performance, music and animation. Start with the manga if you would rather read Yukinobu Tatsu’s original work. Shueisha’s season-three announcement identifies the manga as the source and links to Volume 1; check that the edition and availability suit your market.

Who made the series?
