Clint Eastwood was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951, served at Fort Ord in California as a swimming instructor and lifeguard, and was honorably discharged in 1953. His service took place during the Korean War, but the available accounts cited here do not establish that he deployed to Korea or saw combat.
What Eastwood did in the Army
The U.S. Department of Defense says Eastwood was drafted in 1951 and, after basic training, served at Fort Ord, California, as a swimming instructor. The U.S. Army’s profile of famous veterans also identifies his Fort Ord swim-instructor role.
Eastwood later recalled working at the Fort Ord pool as a lifeguard and swim instructor. In a Monterey Herald account published by Brian Phan on February 26, 2022, he described how much time he spent there: “I actually lived down at that pool.” The article says his pool work was during 1951–52.
When he served—and when he left
- 1951: Eastwood was drafted into the Army during the Korean War, according to the Department of Defense and the PBS American Masters timeline.
- 1951–52: His recollections of lifeguard and swim-instructor work at the Fort Ord pool are reported by the Monterey Herald.
- 1953: The Department of Defense says he was honorably discharged. PBS also dates his discharge to 1953.
The U.S. Army says that after leaving the service, Eastwood used his GI Bill education benefit to take acting classes.

Did he fight in Korea?
Being drafted during the Korean War does not, by itself, mean Eastwood fought in Korea. The cited accounts place his documented assignment at Fort Ord in California; they do not establish a deployment to Korea or combat participation. They also do not establish his exact military rank.
Why a Navy plane appears in accounts of his Army service
During his Army service, Eastwood was a passenger on a Navy aircraft that crashed off the California coast. The Department of Defense describes the aircraft as a Navy AD-1Q torpedo bomber that developed engine trouble near Point Reyes; it says Eastwood and the pilot swam about two miles to shore in cold water. In a 2009 Fresh Air interview, Eastwood recalled hitching a ride on a Navy plane that crashed off Drakes Bay. The accounts differ on the location, so the incident is best described broadly as a crash off the California coast.
