Spoilers for Chainsaw Man Chapters 167 and 168. Chapter 168 is better understood as a follow-up that complicates the preceding chapter’s intimate encounter than as a confirmed retcon. A retcon would revise or contradict an established event; the available chapter information supports aftermath and added context, not evidence that the encounter was undone.
What does “retcon” mean here?
A retcon is a later change to a story that revises or contradicts something readers were previously shown. A chapter can instead follow an event by showing reactions, consequences, or context that changes how readers interpret it. That is a meaningful shift in perspective, but it does not by itself change what happened.
What do Chapters 167 and 168 establish?
VIZ’s official listings place Chapter 168 after Chapter 167. VIZ dates Chapter 167 to June 11, 2024, and its Chapter 168 listing identifies Chapter 169 as June 25, 2024. These are past releases, not upcoming installments. VIZ Chapter 167 · VIZ Chapter 168
A contemporaneous ComingSoon preview characterized Chapter 168 as addressing the intimate moment from the preceding installment. Does added context excuse what happened?
No. Explanation and excuse are different. Context about the characters or their reactions can affect how a reader understands the scene without making the conduct acceptable or removing its impact. Calling the chapter a reframing is an interpretation of how the follow-up reads; the available sources do not establish that Fujimoto intended to retcon the scene.
