He also described the unusual choreography of filming the penguin dance, with animators helping guide his movements for effects that would be added later.
What did Dick Van Dyke say about working with Julie Andrews?
Van Dyke’s recollections were reported by ABC News on June 27, 2024, after an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. He played Bert, the chimney sweep, opposite Andrews as Mary Poppins, and also took the role of banker Mr. Dawes Sr. ABC News’ account of the interview and Us Weekly’s report both identify the film as the 1964 production.
He remembered Andrews as composed on set: “She was as cool as a cucumber.” The remark captures the contrast he drew between her ease and his own uncertainty about the musical work ahead.
Why did recording the songs challenge him?
Van Dyke said he thought of himself as a bass and Andrews as a soprano. Those are his descriptions of their voices, not formal classifications established by the reports. He recalled that the contrast made recording the soundtrack a challenge, and that Andrews was patient as he worked through it: “It turned out alright and she was so patient with me.” ABC News reported his comments.

A separate recollection from the film’s young Jane Banks offers another glimpse of Andrews’s support for her co-stars. In a 2013 oral history, Karen Dotrice said Andrews helped her relearn the songs and gave up a day off to support her recording with an orchestra. Dotrice recalled: “Julie took me aside and retaught me” the songs. The Guardian’s oral history recounts the episode.
How did the penguin dance work with animation?
Van Dyke remembered that animators were present to help guide his position and movement so the live-action performance could align with the animation added later. He summed up the sequence simply: “I did the dance with the penguin.” The process meant performing in coordination with effects work that was not yet on screen.

Dotrice’s account of filming provides a complementary perspective: actors worked around people and props standing in for cartoon animals, with the effects completed afterward. The recollections describe different parts of the same practical challenge—performing against cues and stand-ins so the animated characters could fit the finished scene. ABC News and The Guardian report these production memories.
How did Van Dyke come to play Bert?
In a memoir excerpt published by the Walt Disney Family Museum in 2011, Van Dyke recalled that Walt Disney offered him the role after noticing his stated interest in family films. Van Dyke also remembered feeling that the script was special. The account gives context for his casting, while his 2024 comments focus on what it was like to make the film with Andrews. Why does Andrews’s steadiness matter to the story?
The film’s production memories make Andrews’s patience more than a passing compliment: Van Dyke recalled needing support as he tackled the songs, while Dotrice remembered Andrews helping her prepare hers. The recollections come from different performers and years—Van Dyke’s comments were reported in 2024, and Dotrice’s in a 2013 oral history—so they are best understood as individual memories rather than a single account of every recording session.
In that same Guardian oral history, co-composer Richard Sherman said he and his brother Robert developed a household-centered story to give Mary Poppins a reason to arrive and leave. That was Sherman’s explanation of the story’s shape, not a claim about Van Dyke’s or Andrews’s experience on set.

How was the film received?
Mary Poppins won five Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Andrews and Best Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” according to Us Weekly’s 2024 report. Its awards recognition adds context to the film’s later reputation, but Van Dyke’s recollections are about the collaborative work behind the performances: singing through a mismatch he felt, taking direction around animation, and working beside an unusually composed co-star.
