Derek Hough and Mark Ballas performed an Argentine tango together during the Dancing with the Stars season 33 finale, dancing to “Libertango” by Tango Bardo. The finale aired November 26, 2024. Their two-man partnership stood apart from the show’s familiar mixed-gender pairings, but it was a special finale performance—not a competing celebrity-pro partnership.

How was this pairing different from a competition partnership?
Hough and Ballas joined for a routine in the finale; they were not paired as a celebrity contestant and professional dancer competing for the season’s title. That distinction matters when discussing representation on the show: a one-off performance by two men is different from a same-sex celebrity-pro partnership in the competition.
E! notes that JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson became the first official same-sex duo to compete on the U.S. version of Dancing with the Stars in 2021. What does “breaking gender norms” mean here?
Partnered ballroom dance is often presented through a man-and-woman pairing, so two men sharing an Argentine tango can challenge familiar expectations about who takes part in that format. That is a way to interpret the visible performance, not a documented statement of Hough’s or Ballas’s intent. The available coverage does not provide a direct explanation from either dancer about why they performed together or a production rationale for the pairing.
The performance can be described without assigning it a motive or claiming a measured cultural effect: Hough and Ballas danced together in a televised finale routine, and the pairing offered an alternative to the show’s conventional mixed-gender format.
