Ladd described the child as two years old in accounts from 2002; a 2025 obituary gave her age as 18 months. A 2023 CBS profile says the accident involved a swimming pool.
What Diane Ladd said about her daughter’s death
In testimony included in a 2002 U.S. House hearing record, Ladd said that she and Bruce Dern had a daughter who died in a “very tragic accident.” Ladd described the child as two years old, but the testimony does not name her or explain how the accident happened. The hearing transcript preserves Ladd’s first-person account.
In a CNN interview on July 25, 2002, Ladd again called the daughter two years old and placed the loss in 1962. The interview transcript says Ladd had testified earlier that day.
Why accounts differ on her age
Ladd’s two 2002 accounts describe the child as two years old. A Guardian obituary published November 4, 2025, names the daughter as Diane and says she was 18 months old. The sources therefore do not give a single agreed age; the difference should be preserved rather than resolved by assuming one account is more precise.

What is reported about the accident
The 2002 testimony and CNN interview describe the death as a tragic accident but do not specify its mechanism. A 2023 CBS profile reports that the accident involved a swimming pool, attributing the account to Laura Dern. That detail comes from later reporting, not from the cited 2002 statements by Ladd.
What Ladd said happened before Laura Dern’s birth
Ladd told Congress that she became pregnant again after her daughter’s death, had a tubal pregnancy and surgery, and later gave birth to Laura Dern. This is Ladd’s retrospective account in the hearing transcript, rather than independently verified medical documentation.
