The Casting of Frank Stone is a branching horror story set in the Dead by Daylight universe, and its connections show up in more than dialogue: guides point to Killer-inspired collectibles, familiar props, music, locations and mechanics. The examples below distinguish those guide-identified Easter eggs from worldbuilding confirmed by the developers. You do not need to know Dead by Daylight to follow the story, but recognizing the references adds another layer.
What kinds of Dead by Daylight Easter eggs are in The Casting of Frank Stone?
PCGamesN and Twinfinite identify references in collectibles, props, music, dialogue, locations and gameplay. Some are direct nods to named characters or places; others echo the larger world of Dead by Daylight. These are examples reported by guides, not a developer-confirmed exhaustive list.
| Reference | What to look for | How it connects |
|---|---|---|
| Relliks | Collectible dolls modeled on Killers | PCGamesN reports 12 dolls and notes that the Clown Rellik’s fingers nod to the Killer’s backstory. Both the count and interpretation are guide-reported. PCGamesN’s Easter egg guide |
| A Survivor’s Theme | Sheet music that can be played on a piano | PCGamesN says the notes evoke the Dead by Daylight lobby theme. PCGamesN’s Easter egg guide |
| Lerys Memorial Institute | A character’s reference to the institute | PCGamesN identifies it as a nod to a known Dead by Daylight location. PCGamesN’s Easter egg guide |
| Smiley Face pin and Afterpiece Tonic | Props identified by a guide in the game | PCGamesN connects them to Dead by Daylight references involving The Clown and The Legion. The guide’s identification depends on recognizing the objects in context. PCGamesN’s Easter egg guide |
| Trinkets | Objects encountered in the story | Twinfinite describes them as replicas of Killer add-ons from Dead by Daylight. Twinfinite’s reference guide |
| Timing mechanic | A prompt requiring a timed input | Twinfinite says the mechanic echoes Dead by Daylight skill checks. Twinfinite’s reference guide |
Which connections are confirmed by the developers?
The Entity links the story to the wider universe
In a developer-authored PlayStation Blog article, Dave Richard, Senior Creative Director at Dead by Daylight, said: “It’s all still linked to The Entity, but this narrative plays out in our world, away from the Trials of Dead by Daylight, which is very interesting to us.” That places Frank Stone’s story in the shared universe while distinguishing it from the game’s Trials.
Plunderer’s Instinct is an explicit name connection
Behaviour Interactive says The Casting of Frank Stone’s Plunderer’s Instinct feature reveals nearby Trinket Chest auras, and notes that it shares its name with a Survivor perk in Dead by Daylight. That connection is stated in the launch announcement; the feature’s chest-highlighting function is a game mechanic, not just a visual nod.

Do you need to play Dead by Daylight to understand the Easter eggs?
No. Supermassive Creative Director Steve Goss said in a January 18, 2024 interview that “you can approach The Casting of Frank Stone knowing Dead by Daylight, and you can approach it without knowing Dead by Daylight, and both approaches are rewarding.” The game is designed to work as a story in its own right, while familiarity with the series helps identify its extra references. Read the Supermassive Games interview.
Can you find every reference in one playthrough?
Not necessarily. Behaviour Interactive’s August 22, 2024 feature article describes 16 final sequences and 185 possible branches. Its Cutting Room Floor feature displays a branching map, lets players revisit pivotal decisions and helps track missed collectibles. According to that article, Cutting Room Floor was immediately available with the Deluxe Edition or unlocked after a first playthrough of the Standard Edition; instant access was also offered as a preorder benefit at the time. These are launch-period edition details, not a guarantee of current edition entitlements. Behaviour Interactive’s feature deep dive.

Collectible hunting can also reveal references that are easy to miss while following the plot. The same deep dive says Plunderer’s Instinct can help by highlighting nearby Trinket Chests. It does not establish that every Easter egg is tied to a collectible or that the feature marks every reference.

The game’s connections work at different scales: a pin or musical phrase can reward recognition, while The Entity establishes a larger lore link. Behaviour’s launch announcement framed the experience as a way to expand the universe and anticipated players finding “all the Easter Eggs and connections.” The concrete prop and music identifications above come from game guides; the shared-universe connection and Plunderer’s Instinct name link are supported by developer statements.
