Spoilers ahead: this review reveals who killed Dorna Bray and how. In “L’affaire Dorna Bray,” the penultimate episode of Death in Paradise series 14, DI Mervin Wilson reopens the apparent boating-accident case that has shadowed his family history. Roy Palmer is the killer, and the episode makes the answer matter as much for Mervin’s reckoning with his mother’s death as for the case itself.
What happens in episode 7?
Mervin reopens the investigation into his late mother Dorna’s death, which had been treated as a boating accident. Roy Palmer, a bar owner connected to Dorna, becomes the prime suspect. The central puzzle is not merely who might have reached her, but how someone could turn a killing at sea into something that looked like a tragic accident.
At the same time, Sterling Fox arrives as Selwyn’s replacement and attempts to interfere with Mervin’s personal investigation. That pressure gives the case a second source of tension: Mervin is pursuing the truth about his own family while a new senior officer challenges his authority to do so.
Who killed Dorna Bray?
Roy Palmer killed Dorna Bray. The episode’s final explanation gives him a financial motive: he was in debt and wanted the valuable ring Dorna wore. The detailed mechanics are explained in the episode transcript; the broadcaster’s press listing identifies Palmer as the prime suspect but does not disclose the full solution.

Palmer sedated Dorna and left her unconscious in her father’s fishing boat as a Category 4 storm approached. She regained consciousness and called the harbour master, but the signal failed before she could give incriminating details. Palmer was relying on the storm to make her death appear accidental.
Why the reveal works as Mervin’s story
The case resolves a mystery seeded through Mervin’s character arc: Dorna’s death was murder, not an accident. Its emotional force comes less from a clever trick than from Mervin finally confronting what happened to the mother he never met. When he identifies her as his mother during the arrest, his controlled anger gives the solution a personal weight beyond the weekly case.

Sterling’s obstruction also ties the procedural plot to Mervin’s private stakes. It puts pressure on his investigation, though viewers may differ on whether that resistance heightens the suspense or delays the resolution. The episode’s most useful measure is how well it balances those competing threads: the mechanics of the murder, the work of the investigation, and Mervin’s grief.
