Dawnbreak is a Perth-born sober sunrise dance event built around silent-disco headphones, electronic music and movement; some gatherings also include a swim or run. Its early growth was reported in March 2025, while Australian studies point to generational differences in abstention and attitudes toward drinking. Neither the event’s popularity nor Australian studies’ findings show that Dawnbreak caused a national shift in alcohol use.
What is Dawnbreak?
Dawnbreak began as a collaboration between Jian Wong Yen, director of Cold Nips, a group that meets weekly for a sunrise ocean swim, and Shannon O’Connor, director of Streamline Entertainment and DJ Shann. The idea was to bring sunrise dips together with high-energy music and movement.
At an event, people arrive early, put on headphones and dance to electronic and house music. Some then swim. Dawnbreak’s event-host listing describes the format as sober sunrise silent-disco dance parties and fun runs, so not every gathering should be assumed to include the same activities.
O’Connor told PerthNow: “We wanted to create an experience that wakes people up in the best way possible — through connection, music, and movement.”

How Dawnbreak grew in its first reported season
PerthNow’s feature, published 23 March 2025, reported that Dawnbreak’s first event drew 300 attendees and that 750 people attended its 14 March 2025 event. The publication also reported that 80% of tickets for the March event sold in its first hour. These are figures from that report, not current attendance or ticket-sales data.
The same feature said earlier summer sessions at Scarborough and Cottesloe beaches had sold out and that organizers planned a national tour the following month. Those plans are historical reporting; they do not establish where Dawnbreak operates now.

PerthNow described the gatherings as welcoming to people of different ages. One participant said they felt safer there than at a nightclub. That is an individual experience, not evidence that the event format is objectively safer than nightclubs.
Where to find Dawnbreak events in Perth
At the time its listing was reviewed, Dawnbreak’s Humanitix host page showed events scheduled for Kings Park in Perth on 17 October 2026 and Whitfords Nodes Park in Hillarys on 28 November 2026, as well as Gold Coast on 31 October and Adelaide on 14 November. Because dates, venues and ticket availability can change—and those listed dates may have passed or changed—check Dawnbreak’s live Humanitix host page for current details before making plans.

A separate Humanitix listing described a 7 February 2026 Perth finale at Whitfords Nodes featuring an ExtraDark format and a post-disco village. That was a past event, but it shows how the program has included formats beyond a standard sunrise dance gathering.
Are young Australians drinking less?
Australian research supports a generational difference in some measures of drinking, but it does not make every measure interchangeable. Abstaining, the amount consumed by people who drink, and social attitudes toward regular drinking are different outcomes.

Abstention and consumption
A 2025 longitudinal study of Australians reported higher adjusted odds of abstention for Generation Z, Millennials and Generation X than for Baby Boomers. In the study’s adjusted model, Generation Z had 17.74 times the odds of abstention compared with Baby Boomers (95% confidence interval 13.22–23.80). This is a study-specific odds ratio, not a claim that 17.74 times as many Gen Z people abstain or that every young person does so. The study’s conclusion also describes increased abstention and lower overall consumption among Generation Z compared with previous generations, while distinguishing abstention from how much drinkers consume.
Attitudes toward regular drinking
A 2023 age-period-cohort study in Drug and Alcohol Dependence analysed seven waves of Australian survey data from 2001 to 2019, covering 166,093 respondents aged 14 and older. It found that disapproval of regular drinking, after declining across earlier cohorts, rose sharply among people born in the 1990s or later. The authors said the reasons behind changes in attitudes and drinking remain unclear.

Why the trend is not a settled forecast
PerthNow quoted Associate Professor Michael Livingston of the National Drug Research Institute cautioning that heavy drinking remains a serious problem among Australian adults. He also said it was too early to know how younger cohorts’ drinking would change as they aged, including after experiencing COVID-era lockdowns. The feature reported his expectation that future generations may drink less; that is a forecast, not an established outcome.
These studies describe population-level patterns. They do not explain why those changes occurred, and they do not test whether sober events such as Dawnbreak contribute to them. A popular local event can illustrate an appealing alternative to nightlife without serving as evidence of a national cause.

The format uses headphones, but Dawnbreak’s event listings do not establish a brand or model, or say whether attendees must bring their own. Check the ticket details for the particular event rather than assuming equipment is supplied or required. For organizers creating a similar event, wireless silent-disco headphones are one possible equipment category to consider; no specific product is identified here.
