Selena Gomez was reported to be portraying Linda Ronstadt in a biopic announced in January 2024, with David O. Russell attached to direct. Gomez said in November 2024 that the project was still happening, but she did not know when; no production start or release date has been confirmed in the sources cited here.
What was announced about the Linda Ronstadt biopic?
On January 10, 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that Selena Gomez would portray Ronstadt. The paper described Ronstadt as an 11-time Grammy Award winner. Ronstadt acknowledged the news in an Instagram story with the line, “It all started with a simple dream.”
Pitchfork reported that David O. Russell was attached to direct and that Ronstadt’s manager John Boylan and James Keach would produce. The film was described as being in pre-production at the time. That is a January 2024 status report, not confirmation that filming began.
Is the film still happening, and when will it be released?
In a November 20, 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gomez was asked whether she was still doing the biopic. She replied, “That’s still happening, though I’m not sure when,” adding, “We want to make sure it’s going to be good.” Her comments confirm that she considered the project ongoing at that point; they do not provide a schedule.

The sources cited here do not establish a production start, distributor, or release date after that interview. January 2024 coverage said no distributor appeared to be attached, but that was the status reported then and should not be read as a current update. There is no confirmed release window to report.
Why Linda Ronstadt’s story lends itself to a biopic
Ronstadt’s career crossed folk, rock, and country. In a 2024 profile, The Guardian described her as having six consecutive platinum albums, including Simple Dreams and Heart Like a Wheel. Her range offers a story that spans musical scenes rather than a single genre.

Ronstadt also spoke candidly about the cost of life on the road. As quoted by The Guardian, she said: “They haven’t invented a word for that loneliness that everybody goes through on the road.” That perspective points beyond a career retrospective to the personal experience behind touring and success.
Her catalog has also reached new listeners through television. After “Long Long Time” appeared in an episode of The Last of Us, Spotify reported a 4,900% increase in streams compared with the previous week, according to the Los Angeles Times. The figure was a reported week-over-week spike tied to that episode, not a measure of the song’s ongoing listening level.

What to watch or read while the film’s status remains uncertain
Simple Dreams: Ronstadt’s memoir
Ronstadt’s memoir, Simple Dreams, is useful background for readers who want her own account of her life and music. Gomez shared an image of the book as news of the biopic emerged, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. That connection does not establish that the film will adapt the memoir.
Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice: a documentary
The 2019 documentary Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice is a separate work from the announced biopic. It is an option for viewers seeking an existing screen portrait, but it is not a version of the Gomez project.
