The response revived an allegation about Reagan’s Hollywood years attributed to Kitty Kelley’s unauthorized biography. The available reporting traces where the allegation came from; it does not verify it, or establish a pattern in Reagan’s intimate life.
What prompted the comparison
Shapiro’s post brought two very different public images into contrast: Madonna as a provocative pop star and Reagan as a conservative ideal associated with family life. Retrospective accounts describe the post as the trigger for renewed online discussion of Reagan’s private life, rather than the release of new evidence about it. VICE and The Brag recount that context.

Critics challenged not only the comparison but the moral judgment implicit in contrasting the women’s images. That response raised questions about sexual double standards: how women are judged for sexuality, and how a polished public persona can be treated as evidence about private conduct. A photograph, meme, or online reaction cannot establish what either woman did in private. InsideHook discusses the controversy while cautioning about verification.
Where the allegation came from—and what is known
Coverage of the viral discussion traces the allegation about Reagan’s intimate life to Kitty Kelley’s Nancy Reagan: The Unauthorized Biography. Kelley’s book became controversial when it appeared in 1991; TIME’s contemporaneous account covered the dispute and quoted James Rosebush, then Reagan’s former chief of staff: “Had people liked Nancy Reagan in the first place they wouldn’t be susceptible to all this dirt.” That was Rosebush’s reaction to the biography controversy, not evidence for or against the allegation. TIME’s 1991 report provides the contemporary context.
#1 Best Overall
The reviewed reporting establishes that the allegation was attributed to Kelley’s book and later recirculated online. It does not independently verify the alleged conduct, establish the underlying sourcing, or justify presenting the claim as fact. The careful description is therefore that an allegation from an unauthorized biography went viral again—not that Reagan’s conduct or reputation has been proven. InsideHook, VICE, and The Brag trace the claim and its online afterlife.

The phrase “intimate life trends” suggests a documented pattern or analysis over time. The available coverage instead concerns one allegation, its disputed origins, and its renewed circulation after Shapiro’s comparison. It supplies no defensible basis for describing a trend, and no relevant named statistic supports one.

The comparison is best understood as a clash between public images and the standards applied to women, not as a finding about either woman’s private life. TIME’s later obituary provides biographical and marriage context for Reagan, but does not establish the allegation discussed in the viral posts: “Remembering Nancy Reagan: The End of a White House Love Story.”
