David Henrie says the idea for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place grew partly from becoming a father himself—and from seeing a natural next chapter for Justin Russo as an adult parent. Henrie, who returned as Justin and is an executive producer, has also described the sequel’s aim as welcoming longtime fans while inviting a new generation into the series.
What did David Henrie say about the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel?
In a D23 interview about the sequel and its second season, Henrie connected the creative idea to his experience of fatherhood and to the chance to continue Justin’s story beyond his younger years. He called becoming a father “one of the first dominoes to fall when coming up with this idea.” That was one influence he described, not a claim that it was the project’s sole origin. D23’s interview with David Henrie was reported in October 2025.
Henrie also described the audience goal as bridging generations: “Our goal was to make the original fans feel seen and hugged, but at the same time, create an invitation to a whole new generation of kids that are going to get to enjoy this world.” He characterized the Russo family as “messy and chaotic and crazy,” while emphasizing that they “have each other’s backs.”
What is the Wizards sequel called?
The official title is Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Disney announced the series order in March 2024 under the working title Wizards, then revealed its full title in May as a continuation of Wizards of Waverly Place. Henrie returned in a regular role as Justin and serves as an executive producer; Selena Gomez is also an executive producer and guest stars as Alex. Disney’s series announcement and its title announcement provide the details.

What is Wizards Beyond Waverly Place about?
The sequel shifts the focus to Justin as an adult. He has chosen a mortal life with his wife, Giada, and sons Roman and Milo. When Alex brings Billie, a young wizard who needs help, Justin returns to magic to mentor her while managing family responsibilities and protecting the Wizard World. Disney premiered the series on Disney Channel on October 29, 2024, and announced it would arrive on Disney+ the next day. Disney’s premiere announcement gives those dates.
That premise makes the sequel’s generational bridge part of the story itself: Justin is no longer a young wizard competing alongside his siblings, but a parent responsible for guiding younger characters. Billie brings a new lead into the Russo world, while Justin and Alex connect the series to its original cast and history.
