David Lynch, the experimental filmmaker behind Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet, died on January 16, 2025, four days before his 79th birthday. His family announced his death; contemporaneous reports said the cause was not immediately available.
What is known about David Lynch’s death
Lynch was born January 20, 1946, and died January 16, 2025, aged 78. His family announced his death that day. The Associated Press and ABC News Australia reported that the cause was not then available; AP also said the location was not immediately known.
Lynch disclosed in 2024 that he had emphysema after years of smoking. That disclosure is health context, not an established cause of death. No cause should be inferred from it.
In the family announcement reproduced by AP, relatives wrote: “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’” They added: “It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

From painting and experimental shorts to feature films
Lynch began as a visual artist, studying painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia. He made the short Six Men Getting Sick in 1966, then moved to Los Angeles in 1971 to study filmmaking at the AFI Conservatory. There he developed his first feature, Eraserhead, released in 1977. Its unsettling imagery and sound found an audience on the midnight-movie circuit, establishing Lynch as a filmmaker outside conventional studio storytelling.
The Elephant Man (1980) brought him wider recognition. The film received eight Academy Award nominations, including a directing nomination for Lynch. He followed it with Dune (1984), then Blue Velvet (1986), a film whose menace beneath the calm appearance of a small town became central to how many viewers understood his distinctive style.

How Lynch changed television with Twin Peaks
In 1990, Lynch and writer Mark Frost brought Twin Peaks to television. Its small-town comedy, police investigation and dreamlike mystery revolved around one question: “Who killed Laura Palmer?” Rather than treating that question as a conventional whodunit alone, the series used the investigation to open onto the town’s hidden violence, secrets and uncanny forces.
The series earned three Golden Globes and two Emmys, according to AP. Lynch returned to the story with the 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me and a third series in 2017, extending the story rather than simply resolving its mysteries.

Mulholland Drive and Lynch’s later films
Lynch’s other major features include Wild at Heart (1990), Lost Highway (1997), The Straight Story (1999), Mulholland Drive (2001) and Inland Empire (2006). The variety matters: the road movie The Straight Story is markedly gentler in tone than the unstable identities and fractured chronology of Lost Highway or Inland Empire.
Mulholland Drive began as a television pilot and was reworked into a feature film. Its nonlinear mystery, shifting identities and Hollywood setting became among Lynch’s most celebrated work. The Television Academy records it as his third Best Director Oscar nomination and notes that he won Best Director at Cannes in 2001.

Awards and recognition
Lynch received three Academy Award nominations for directing: The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive. The Academy honored him with an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2019. Wild at Heart won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1990, and Lynch won the festival’s Best Director award for Mulholland Drive in 2001.
His influence was difficult to separate from his singular approach. Steven Spielberg described Lynch’s films as “handmade,” while Steven Soderbergh called him influential but “impossible to imitate.” Actor Kyle MacLachlan, a frequent collaborator, said, “I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision.”

Lynch’s artistic life beyond the screen
Lynch also wrote about his experiences with transcendental meditation in his 2005 book Catching the Big Fish. The Television Academy says he donated all royalties from the book to the David Lynch Foundation. His work across film, television, painting and writing reflected a career that resisted a single medium or a single explanation.
