The original album is distinct from the 2021 50th-anniversary editions, which add a bonus disc of demos, outtakes and alternate versions.
What is the original album?
Released in 1971, If I Could Only Remember My Name was Crosby’s solo debut. Its nine tracks move among different musical approaches rather than following a conventional pop-song sequence. Rhino describes “Cowboy Movie” as driving, “Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)” as extended, with choral and modal-jazz textures, and “Orleans” as a many-voice treatment. Those are the label’s characterizations, but they point to the album’s range.
The original nine-song track list
- “Music Is Love”
- “Cowboy Movie”
- “Tamalpais High (At About 3)”
- “Laughing”
- “What Are Their Names”
- “Traction In The Rain”
- “Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)”
- “Orleans”
- “I’d Swear There Was Somebody Here”
Why does a solo debut sound so communal?
The recording story is less solitary than the album credit suggests. Rhino says Crosby began recording in 1970 as he grieved the death of Christine Hinton, who had been killed in a car accident the previous year. Sessions took place at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco, where Crosby found refuge in making music. Rhino’s 2021 account says Jerry Garcia appeared nearly every night; Crosby recalled Garcia’s relaxed presence and willingness to play.
As Crosby put it, in a quote reproduced in Rhino’s anniversary account: “Hey, I heard you were doing something. What are you doing? Let’s do something.” Rhino also names musicians associated with the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Santana, as well as Graham Nash, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, as part of the wider circle around the sessions. The available account does not establish every musician’s contribution to each track, so the album is best understood as a collaborative setting without assigning individual guests song by song.

Grief, music and friendship
In a 2021 Los Angeles Times interview, Crosby called making the album a “lifesaver.” The paper quotes him saying: “Music and friendship can help you transcend even deep sadness and loss.” That context helps explain the record’s emotional stakes, but it need not reduce the music to biography. Rhino’s account also quotes Steve Silberman’s anniversary liner notes, which describe its “uplifting and redemptive qualities” as the result of gifted players supporting one of their own. That is Silberman’s interpretation in the liner notes, not a neutral account of critical consensus.
What changes in the 2021 50th-anniversary editions?
The anniversary program preserves the original nine-song album as a remaster and adds a bonus disc with a dozen unreleased demos, outtakes and alternate versions. Rhino said original engineer Stephen Barncard oversaw the remaster, with restoration and speed correction by Plangent Processes. The label announced both a 180-gram vinyl LP and a two-CD edition.

The official CD listing describes nearly an hour of unreleased recordings spanning the album’s making. It also reaches further back than the 1970 sessions: the earliest seeds date to March 28, 1968, when Crosby and producer Paul Rothchild recorded early versions, including “Tamalpais High (At About 3),” at Hollywood Recorders in Los Angeles.
Archival material on the bonus disc
The additional recordings include “Riff 1,” demos of several album songs, and the titles “Kids And Dogs,” “The Wall Song,” “Games,” “Where Will I Be,” “Bach Mode,” “Coast Road,” “Dancer” and “Fugue.” The alternate “Cowboy Movie” is notable for Neil Young soloing instead of Garcia.

A first listen can follow the contrast between the more immediately driving “Cowboy Movie,” the expansive “Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)” and the layered voices of “Orleans.” The original sequence then closes with “I’d Swear There Was Somebody Here.” The anniversary extras offer a different kind of listening: they let the finished album sit beside earlier song forms and alternate approaches, rather than replacing its original running order.
