David Byrne’s Who Is the Sky? turns questions about love and identity, pandemic-era solitude, and ordinary bodily routines into buoyant, often absurd pop. Released September 5, 2025, it was his first new album since American Utopia (2018). Its cheerful sound is intentional: Byrne wanted groove and melody to hold potentially negative ideas alongside joy. Whether that balance feels humane or relentlessly sunny is the central divide between its reviewers.
What does Who Is the Sky? sound like?
The 12-song album brings Byrne’s conversational, curious songwriting together with pop production and arrangements by members of New York chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra. Producer Kid Harpoon (Tom Hull) worked with Byrne on the record; named guests include St. Vincent, Paramore singer Hayley Williams, The Smile drummer Tom Skinner, and percussionist Mauro Refosco. Rather than choosing between chamber music and accessible pop, the album lets the ensemble’s color and movement serve songs built around direct hooks, humor, and observation. The official announcement describes it as cinematic and joyful, poised between avant-garde and pop.
“Everybody Laughs,” the lead single, lays out the album’s method. Byrne describes it as an anthropological view of New York life: people live, die, laugh, cry, sleep, and stare at the ceiling. The list is funny partly because it is so basic—and because the song treats shared routines as a way of noticing how much people have in common. Its groove keeps the subject light without making the facts of life disappear.
Other songs shift the lens from the universal to the intimate or ridiculous. “What Is the Reason for It?” asks about love with Williams over mariachi-influenced brass. “She Explains Things to Me” approaches love through perspective and gratitude. “My Apartment Is My Friend” makes home into a companion; “A Door Called No” takes discrimination as its starting metaphor. Elsewhere, “I Met the Buddha at a Downtown Party” and “Moisturizing Thing” find comic potential in spiritual wisdom and skincare. The range gives the album its documentary-like curiosity: it watches people’s habits, private comforts, and contradictions, then turns them into pop scenes.

Why is the album called Who Is the Sky??
The title began as a speech-to-text mistake. Byrne had said “who is this guy?” and the software rendered it as “Who Is the Sky?” He liked the result because it sounded cosmic and spiritual while also being completely nonsensical. That oddity suited a record circling questions such as “Who am I? What is love? And why do we fall in love?” The phrase doesn’t answer those questions; it makes their uncertainty feel playful. Byrne recounted the origin in an ABC/Double J interview.
How does the humor make room for serious subjects?
Byrne has said he wanted music that might help him feel better, and that he tried to balance potentially negative ideas with an uplifting feeling from groove and melody. In the album announcement, he put it this way: “Music can do that – hold opposites simultaneously.” The cheer is therefore a compositional choice, not proof that the songs have no darker concerns.

“My Apartment Is My Friend” grew from Byrne spending nearly two years at home cooking and drawing during the pandemic; he described the apartment as shelter and safe space. “A Door Called No” connects its metaphor to discrimination and a plea for unity. In the Double J conversation, Byrne also invoked a line from playwright, actor, and director John Cameron Mitchell: “the most punk thing you can do right now is empathy.” That line is Mitchell’s, as Byrne relays it, not Byrne’s own formulation.
Why do critics disagree about the album’s optimism?
Will Hermes’s Rolling Stone review hears the record as musical comedy: Byrne playfully considers love, aging, and everyday curiosities, with the title’s accidental origin and songs such as “The Avant Garde” and “Moisturizing Thing” reinforcing its comic perspective. The collaborations, including Williams and St. Vincent, add to that sense of a lively, shared performance.

Pitchfork’s review also recognizes the vivid, accessible pop and Ghost Train Orchestra’s colorful arrangements, but finds the sustained brightness tiring. In that reading, the gaiety leaves too little tension, ambiguity, or subtext. The disagreement is less about whether the album is cheerful than what that cheer accomplishes: it can feel like comfort and comic perspective, or like an insistence that smooths over complexity.
