In Jeff Elbel’s review, the finale’s emotional force comes above all from Gilmour’s expressive guitar playing—and the night is memorable without being presented as flawless.
Which Madison Square Garden show does this review cover?
Madison Square Garden listed five Gilmour performances for the Luck and Strange Tour: November 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10, 2024. This review concerns the November 10 finale, not all five concerts. Jeff Elbel’s review was published November 13 by Illinois Entertainer. The tour marked Gilmour’s first live shows in eight years and supported Luck and Strange, scheduled for release on September 6, 2024, according to Premier Guitar.
How did the set balance new material and familiar songs?
The new album was not a brief promotional detour. Elbel describes its songs as distributed through the set and forming its skeleton, with Pink Floyd selections and earlier solo work providing familiar reference points. That balance shaped the evening’s emotional arc: the recent material established a contemplative mood, while classics such as “Breathe” and “Time” prompted a more overt audience response.
The setlist.fm record for November 10 lists two sets and an encore, including “5 A.M.,” “Luck and Strange,” “Breathe,” “Time,” “Fat Old Sun,” “Marooned,” “Wish You Were Here,” “Between Two Points,” “High Hopes,” “Sorrow,” “A Great Day for Freedom,” “In Any Tongue,” “The Great Gig in the Sky,” “Coming Back to Life,” “Scattered,” and, as the encore, “Comfortably Numb.” This is a community-maintained listing, not an official setlist. It also records the show as three hours long, ending at 10:40 p.m.; that timing applies to this entry, not to the tour as a whole. View the November 10 setlist on setlist.fm.

What stood out in the performance?
Gilmour’s guitar phrasing
Elbel’s central point is that Gilmour’s playing still communicates with unusual directness. He describes the opening note of “5 A.M.” as immediately recognizable and praises the guitarist’s blues-inflected, lyrical phrasing for feeling emotional and conversational. The evening’s instrumental passages and extended solos gave that quality room to breathe, rather than treating guitar fireworks as an end in themselves.
The familiar songs turned into shared moments
Elbel reports that the audience sang along during “Breathe” and “Wish You Were Here.” In “Time,” he highlights the harmonies and vintage animation. “Fat Old Sun” brought a less obvious Pink Floyd catalogue choice into the mix, while “High Hopes” was accompanied by balloons. These moments gave the set range: recognition and communal singing sat alongside quieter, more inward stretches.

Romany Gilmour and the newer songs
“Between Two Points,” a newer song, gave Romany Gilmour a featured moment on harp and vocals, as noted by Elbel. The album’s reflective frame also fits Polly Samson’s description of its perspective in Premier Guitar: “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” That context helps explain why the new material could anchor a set that also drew heavily on songs many listeners already knew.

As a critical judgment, yes: the November 10 set appears to have earned its finale status through contrast rather than sheer escalation. Elbel singles out the final solo in “Scattered” before the encore, then the closing “Comfortably Numb.” The familiar song delivered a natural high point, but the review’s account suggests the emotional payoff had been built across the evening—through the newer songs’ restraint, the crowd’s response to the classics, and Gilmour’s patient, expressive playing.

The review does not describe a perfect performance. Elbel notes a few rare bum notes and a small falter in the “High Hopes” lap-steel solo. Those slips are part of his account of an exceptional night, not a reason to mistake the performance for polished studio reproduction. Before the encore, Elbel transcribes Gilmour’s words: “Good night,” he had said before leaving the stage ahead of the encore. “We’ll see you one of these days again, with a little luck.”
