Damsel is most rewarding for viewers who want a fairy-tale survival story with a real reversal: Elodie saves herself, returns for her sister, and persuades the dragon to end the cycle of revenge. The ending gives the adventure a character-driven payoff, though whether that makes the whole film worth watching depends on how much you enjoy fairy-tale subversion.
How does Elodie escape the dragon’s cave?
Spoilers for the ending of Damsel.
Elodie agrees to marry Prince Henry in hopes of helping her resource-poor northern community. Instead, Aurea’s royal family throws her into a chasm as payment for an ancient debt: the dragon’s three offspring were killed by Aurea’s ancestors. As Elodie navigates the cave, she finds evidence of women sacrificed before her and eventually escapes.
Her escape is not the end of the danger. The royal family selects her younger sister, Floria, as the next sacrifice. Elodie goes back to face the dragon rather than leave her sister to the same fate.
What happens in Damsel’s ending?
In the final confrontation, Elodie reveals that the women sacrificed by Aurea were not royal by blood. The royal family had deceived the dragon through its ritual, directing the creature’s vengeance toward innocent women instead of the guilty royal line.

Elodie persuades the dragon to stop seeking revenge. She and Floria survive, and Elodie leaves with the dragon. The resolution is not simply a matter of defeating a monster: Elodie confronts the injustice behind the conflict and chooses to stop its violence from claiming another victim.
Why the ending may make the film worth watching
Elodie drives the rescue
The story does not wait for Prince Henry to save Elodie. She gets herself out of the cave and then returns for Floria. Netflix’s ending explainer quotes Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Elodie, describing the expectation the film overturns: “You’re expecting the prince to turn around and save her, and… no. Don’t wait for the prince.”

The dragon is more than a monster
The dragon has a genuine grievance: Aurea’s ancestors killed its offspring. But the royal family’s deception means its revenge falls on women who had no part in that crime. That history complicates the usual hero-versus-monster setup without excusing the danger Elodie faces.
The climax breaks the revenge pattern
Elodie’s victory is not just survival. She changes what happens next by convincing the dragon to stop pursuing vengeance. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has said his aim was to surprise viewers with a new take on familiar stories; Netflix’s cast and production feature quotes him saying, “As a filmmaker, one of the things I always want to do is surprise the audience with a new take on a story.” That intention helps explain the film’s fairy-tale reversal, but it does not prove that every viewer will find the ending satisfying.

Who is likely to enjoy Damsel?
The ending is a strong reason to watch if you like fairy tales that challenge the rescue-by-prince formula, heroines who act on their own behalf, and conflicts in which the apparent monster has a history of its own. If you are mainly looking for an uncomplicated creature-feature showdown, the resolution’s emphasis on truth and breaking the revenge cycle may be less appealing.
