He connected it to “your shake is like a fish” in “Right Through You.” He also recalled a post-breakup dinner call that reminded him of “You Oughta Know.” Those are Coulier’s interpretations, not confirmation that he inspired the song. Vanity Fair reported in 2022 that Morissette had not confirmed or denied the speculation.
The detail Coulier said stood out
In a 2022 SiriusXM interview recounted by Vanity Fair, Coulier said he recognized personal details while listening to Jagged Little Pill. The clearest example he named was the line “your shake is like a fish” in “Right Through You.”
Coulier said he and Morissette had joked about a limp handshake. As he put it, “I’d go, ‘Hey, dead fish me,’ and we’d do this dead fish handshake.” The recollection gave him reason to think some lyrics drew on moments from their relationship, but it does not establish who inspired “You Oughta Know.” Stereogum’s 2022 account also reports the handshake anecdote from the same interview.
Why “You Oughta Know” felt personal to him
Coulier said he first heard “You Oughta Know” on the radio while driving around Detroit in 1995. He initially liked the hook, then recognized Morissette’s voice and thought, “Ooh, oh no! Oh, I can’t be this guy!” He said he went to a record store, bought the Jagged Little Pill CD, parked, and listened to the whole album. He described hearing “a lot of familiar stuff” from conversations between them. These are details from Coulier’s account, not independent evidence of Morissette’s intent.

A separate memory he tied to “You Oughta Know” concerned the lyric about being called in the middle of dinner. Coulier told HuffPost Live that after their breakup, Morissette called while he was eating, and he asked if he could call her back. ABC News reported the recollection in 2014; it had also reported his dinner-call account in 2013.
What Morissette and Coulier have said about the attribution
The public record does not confirm Coulier as the subject of “You Oughta Know.” Vanity Fair reported that Morissette had neither confirmed nor denied the speculation. In a 2019 appearance with Andy Cohen, she said, “There’s been about six people that have taken credit for it.” That was her estimate, as reported by Vanity Fair, not an independently verified count.

Coulier’s own public account has also shifted. ABC News reported in 2014 that he had at one point accepted being identified with the song, then said he did not want to be that person and called the story an “urban legend.” He described a press encounter in which a joking remark that he was the guy snowballed into a persistent story.
The distinction matters: Coulier recognized details that matched memories he shared with Morissette, including the handshake and dinner call. That supports saying he saw personal connections in the lyrics; it does not support stating as fact that Morissette wrote “You Oughta Know” about him.
