Darryl Hickman, the former child actor best known for The Grapes of Wrath and Leave Her to Heaven, died May 22, 2024, at age 92. His family announced his death but did not give a cause. Although Hickman had received treatment for Parkinson’s disease, the available reporting does not establish that it caused his death.
Who was Darryl Hickman?
Born in Los Angeles on July 28, 1931, Hickman began acting as a child after a dance-studio owner encouraged his parents to enroll him in lessons. The classes led to auditions and a Paramount contract. His first film appearance was in The Prisoner of Zenda in 1937.
Hickman became a prominent child performer in the 1940s. He played Winfield Joad in John Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and appeared in films including Meet Me in St. Louis, The Human Comedy, Rhapsody in Blue, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers and Any Number Can Play.
What did Hickman play in Leave Her to Heaven?
In the 1945 film, Hickman played Danny Harland, the physically challenged younger brother of novelist Richard Harland. The story includes a notorious drowning scene, and Danny is one of the film’s defining characters. The role remains one of Hickman’s best-known credits alongside Winfield Joad.

A difficult transition and return to acting
Hickman later said that moving on from child fame was difficult. He stepped away from acting in the early 1950s and briefly considered a monastic life before returning to Hollywood. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, then took adult roles in film and television.
His television appearances included Perry Mason, The Untouchables and Gunsmoke. On The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, he played Davey, the older brother of the character portrayed by his real-life younger brother, Dwayne Hickman, in three episodes.
