Spoilers for Dandadan Episode 7. The episode earns its heartbreak by turning a supernatural fight into a tragedy about Acrobatic Silky’s grief and maternal attachment. When Aira’s life is at risk, Silky offers to save her; the flashback that follows changes the meaning of the conflict, and the final scene makes that history matter in the present. Calling the episode a “masterpiece” is a critical judgment, not an objective consensus—but its expanded storytelling and carefully shaped animation make a strong case for the claim.
Why Episode 7 is so sad
Episode 7 shifts registers. Momo and Okarun’s fight with Acrobatic Silky is frightening and energetic, but the story slows when Aira is in mortal danger and Silky offers a way to save her. The flashback reveals the loss behind Silky’s attachment to Aira. Her actions remain dangerous, but the audience now understands them through grief rather than seeing only an antagonist to defeat.
That change in perspective is the episode’s emotional hinge. The past does not erase the violence of the present; it gives the conflict another dimension. When the story returns to Aira and Silky, the farewell lands as recognition between two characters whose connection has been shaped by loss.
How the episode expands the manga’s flashback
In a November 19, 2024 interview with Newtype Magazine, storyboard artist and animation director Shuto Enomoto and episode director Kotaro Matsunaga discussed the episode’s production. The interview describes the manga flashback as brief and explains that series director Fuga Yamashiro developed the script into a fuller focus on Silky. Enomoto then shaped the storyboard with Yamashiro’s visual ideas in mind.

That expansion matters because the episode gives Silky’s history room to change how the earlier action reads. It is not simply an added explanation after the fight: it reorients the story around the person the fight seemed to define as its enemy. A detailed panel-by-panel comparison is not established here, so it is safer to describe the flashback as expanded than to claim precisely how every scene differs from the manga.
How animation carries the grief
The chase makes loss physical
Enomoto described building a 3D layout in Blender for the sequence in which Silky runs from the apartment after her daughter is taken. The production account makes clear that the scene’s movement and staging were planned, not incidental. Silky’s desperate flight gives the flashback a physical urgency that supports its emotional turn.

Hair becomes part of the conflict
Enomoto also discussed composing the fight so Silky’s hair suggests that she is trapped by it. That visual idea links her supernatural power to confinement: the hair is both a weapon and an image of a character caught in the force of her own story.
The final scene is carefully shaped
Enomoto said he had planned for animator Kana Ito to handle the final scene and praised the resulting work. Producer Hiroshi Kamei, speaking to Popverse, described Episode 7 as a place where “the layout and movements are meticulously refined,” adding that the studio went through “a great deal of trial and error during the production process.” Those remarks offer production context for the episode’s precision without reducing its effect to technique alone.

Why the “masterpiece” label is a defensible opinion
ORICON reported that viewers praised the episode’s animation and emotional depth after broadcast, including reactions describing it as a “masterpiece” and saying, “This episode was on another level!” Those are selected audience comments reported by ORICON, not the result of a representative poll. They show visible enthusiasm, not universal agreement or a measured episode rating.
The stronger case for the label comes from the episode itself: it gives a formerly frightening figure a history that changes the stakes, expands that history through deliberate visual storytelling, and returns to the present for an emotionally charged farewell. Whether that makes Episode 7 a masterpiece is ultimately a viewer’s judgment; the craft and structure explain why many viewers responded so strongly.

Where to watch and what the numbers do—and don’t—say
ORICON named Crunchyroll as a distributor in its 2024 report and noted that availability varies by region. Check the current catalog where you live rather than assuming the episode is available everywhere. ORICON also reported more than 3.2 million copies in circulation for the series in 2024; that is a series-level figure from that report, not an Episode 7 viewership or rating statistic.
