Dahan: Raakan Ka Rahasya has an evocative setting, committed performances and a mystery built around a village’s warnings about a sacred site. But across its nine episodes, the Hindi supernatural thriller complicates and prolongs its story until its clash between reason and belief loses some force. It is best suited to viewers who enjoy eerie atmosphere more than tightly paced plotting.
What is Dahan about?
The series follows Avni, an IAS officer played by Tisca Chopra, who arrives in the fictional Rajasthan village of Shilaspura after personal and professional setbacks. A proposed mining project has met local resistance. Village leader Pramukh, played by Saurabh Shukla, warns that disturbing a site believed to be a demon’s lair will bring a curse. As killings and disappearances deepen the mystery, Avni investigates what is happening.
The premise sets up a familiar question—whether events have rational explanations or something supernatural is at work—but the conflict is not simply a debate between a skeptical official and credulous villagers. Mining, local belief, ecological unease and family grief all enter the story. The result has more thematic ambition than a straightforward monster mystery, though those strands do not always make the central puzzle clearer.
PTI reported that the nine-episode series was filmed across Rajasthan and began streaming on Disney+ Hotstar on September 16, 2022. That is its original release information, not confirmation of current availability. PTI’s release announcement lists the ensemble, including Rajesh Tailang, Mukesh Tiwari, Ankur Nayyar, Rohan Joshi and Lehar Khan, alongside Chopra and Shukla. Vikranth Pawar directed the series; Scroll.in also identifies him as its creator.

Does the atmosphere work?
Atmosphere is the show’s strongest asset. Its Rajasthan locations and production design give Shilaspura a persuasive sense of place, and the story’s legends and ominous setting lend weight to the threat surrounding the mining site. The visual world helps the supernatural possibility feel present even when the plot is busy explaining, revising or expanding its mystery.
In her review for Scroll.in, Nandini Ramnath praises the world-building, locations, visual effects and Sunil Nigvekar’s production design. Those elements make the series more engaging as an eerie experience than as a puzzle whose clues steadily lock into place.

How are the performances?
Chopra anchors the story as Avni, while Saurabh Shukla’s Pramukh embodies the authority of a community shaped by its own history and beliefs. The ensemble gives the village more texture than a mere backdrop for the investigation. Ramnath particularly singles out Chopra, Mukesh Tiwari and Rohan Joshi for their performances. Their work helps sustain interest through passages when the plot itself feels less assured.
Does the mystery sustain nine episodes?
Not consistently. The story begins with a strong hook, but its momentum slackens intermittently after the middle of the season. Flashbacks, occult behavior, supernatural suggestion and environmental themes accumulate around a mystery that can feel simpler than its presentation. Rather than sharpening the question of what is happening, the additional threads sometimes make the series feel overcomplicated and overextended.

Ramnath argues that the material might have worked just as well as a feature film, and The Times of India’s review also notes a promising early run followed by convolutions and tedious stretches. The pacing problem is not that the series lacks ideas; it is that the ideas do not always combine into a more compelling central story.
Does Dahan balance rationality and superstition?
The premise is most compelling when neither explanation can be dismissed too easily. Avni’s investigation brings a rational framework to a village where belief is bound up with place and collective memory, while the events keep supernatural possibility alive. That tension could support a focused thriller. Instead, the series’ detours and shifts in genre sometimes blur the conflict rather than deepen it.

There is an allegory here about human greed and the costs of disturbing a place for profit, alongside the horror of the curse itself. The mining dispute gives the story stakes beyond whether a ghost or demon exists. But with so many concerns in play, the show’s strongest thematic moments do not always translate into a cleanly escalating mystery.

Choose Dahan: Raakan Ka Rahasya if you value atmospheric settings, production design and an ensemble of committed performances, and are comfortable with a supernatural thriller that takes detours. If your priority is a tightly plotted mystery with consistent momentum, the nine-episode structure may feel like more story than the central premise can comfortably hold.

For a concise critical summary, Ramnath wrote that “a full-length feature film would have worked just as well” and described the show as an “intermittently engrossing allegory about human greed.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, but it captures the series’ trade-off: an evocative world and worthwhile themes, held back by a story that does not always use its length effectively.
