No. The aired finale does not show Damon proposing to Elena. Co-creator Kevin Williamson said a proposal scene was planned for after Elena’s medical-school years, but it was cut when the first edit ran long. The finale instead uses Elena’s scrubs to show that she became a doctor; her ring later implies that she and Damon married.
Was the proposal scene in the aired finale?
No. The proposal was planned, but viewers do not see it in the broadcast episode. In an interview with TV Guide published August 21, 2017, Williamson said, “And there was a moment in the show where he proposed and she responded after medical school.” He did not describe a complete scene or provide its dialogue.
Why was Damon’s proposal cut?
Williamson said the first edit was 18 minutes over the target runtime. He explained that the proposal moment’s purpose was to show Elena had become a doctor: “And the whole point of that moment was just to show that she became a doctor.” The production removed the proposal and conveyed that information with Elena in scrubs instead. The 18-minute figure is Williamson’s account of the first cut, not an independently verified runtime measurement.
Did Damon and Elena get married?
The aired ending implies that they eventually married, but it does not show a wedding or state when one happened. In the future-set scene as Damon and Elena leave the Salvatore family crypt, Elena wears a diamond ring. Access reports that viewers infer marriage from the ring. Julie Plec, the finale’s co-creator and executive producer, offered a qualified interpretation: “I think they got married probably after med school,” while adding that she could not say for certain. That is Plec’s speculation, not an exact wedding date established by the episode.

How does the proposal fit the finale’s ending?
The planned proposal belongs to the characters’ future together, not to the finale’s final afterlife reunion. Williamson described the closing montage as interpretive, saying, “In reality, they did live lives and they did grow old.” He framed it as a vision of peace after loss and grief, rather than a detailed account of every event in their later lives.
Julie Plec co-wrote and directed the finale with Williamson. Before the episode aired, she said Damon and Elena’s reunion fulfilled a promise made when Elena was put under a sleeping spell. That context explains why their reunion mattered to the ending; it does not mean the proposal itself appeared onscreen.
