Daisy Ridley is attached to return as Rey in a new Star Wars film, but the available updates do not establish that production or release is imminent. Lucasfilm announced a post-The Rise of Skywalker story about Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing; Ridley’s later comments have stressed patience and uncertainty about timing.
When is Daisy Ridley returning as Rey?
There is no confirmed release date in the later interview coverage, and the reporting reviewed does not confirm a production start. In a January 28, 2026 report, GamesRadar quoted Ridley, speaking to USA Today, as saying: “Maybe. I don’t know about 2026. In the future sometime, yeah.” That is not a cancellation announcement, but it does not support calling the film imminent either. GamesRadar’s report on her timing comments also quotes Ridley acknowledging how difficult it is to get a film made and saying the wait would be worthwhile.

What is the new Rey Star Wars movie about?
The announced film is set after The Rise of Skywalker and is broadly described as a story about Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was announced as director. Those are the central public details in the announcement coverage; a final title, production start, release date and additional cast have not been confirmed in the reporting cited here. What does Ridley’s return mean for Rey’s story?
Rey’s next chapter follows a character who trained with Luke Skywalker, continued learning from Leia and the Jedi texts, and confronted Palpatine. Those established details provide context for the announced rebuilding premise, but they do not reveal how the new film will develop it. StarWars.com’s Rey databank outlines her background.
In a 2024 Associated Press interview, Ridley said she had not expected to return so soon and was excited by the story: “I’m excited about the story. I didn’t think it would happen that I would go back now. I thought maybe it would at some point, like in the faraway future. But I think the story is great and will appeal to the people that love it, and people who are maybe not as familiar with it. Is the Rey movie still happening?
Ridley remains attached to the announced film, and her public remarks describe waiting rather than abandoning the project. The cited coverage does not provide a fresh production milestone, so the most accurate status is that the film has been announced but its timing remains unsettled—not that it is about to begin filming, and not that it has been canceled.

Star Wars: Legacy by Madeleine Roux is an official Rey and Leia novel set between Episodes VIII and IX. StarWars.com describes them working to repair Rey’s lightsaber and carry on the Jedi legacy. It is a separate book, not a tie-in that confirms details about the later-set film. StarWars.com lists July 28, 2026 as the novel’s on-sale date.
