The Los Angeles County medical examiner later determined that the effects of fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine caused his death and classified the manner as an accident.
How did Shifty Shellshock die?
Binzer was found unresponsive at a Los Angeles residence on June 24, 2024, and was pronounced dead at 12:13 p.m., according to the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner. The examiner certified the cause and manner on September 24, after receiving relevant test and study results.
The official cause was the effects of fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine. The medical examiner classified the manner of death as an accident, stating, “The manner of death is accident.”
What was known when his death was first reported?
The Los Angeles Times reported on June 25, 2024, that Binzer had died at his Los Angeles home at 49. At that point, the cause of death had not been determined and an investigation was underway. The medical examiner’s September announcement supplied the official cause and manner; the initial report should not be mistaken for that later finding.

Who was Shifty Shellshock?
Shifty Shellshock was the stage name of Seth Binzer, lead singer and co-founder of the Los Angeles rap-rock band Crazy Town. The group became widely known for “Butterfly,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Its debut album, The Gift of the Game, sold 2.5 million copies worldwide, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Crazy Town’s music and career
From “Butterfly” to solo work
Crazy Town followed its debut with Darkhorse in 2002. Binzer released the solo album Happy Love Sick in 2004. In an interview that year, he described its sound to the Los Angeles Times: “I tried to remove the heavy rock element. This is more surfer hip-hop: hip-hop with reggae overtones, some dance music and R&B influences.”

Reunion and later years
The band reunited and released The Brimstone Sluggers in 2015. A broader account of Crazy Town’s beginnings, hiatus, reunion and later activity appears in The Guardian’s career timeline.
Binzer also appeared on Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew and Sober House between 2008 and 2010, and spoke publicly about addiction. That history is part of the public record of his life, but it should not be treated as a complete explanation of either his life or his death.
