Ireland’s Court of Appeal unanimously dismissed Conor McGregor’s appeal on July 31, 2025, upholding the civil jury’s finding in Nikita Hand’s favour. The court also ordered McGregor to pay Hand’s costs in both the High Court and the appeal court. The jury had found him liable for assault and awarded €250,000 in damages; this was a civil judgment, not a criminal conviction.
What the appeal was about
Hand’s civil claim arose from an alleged assault at a Dublin hotel on December 9, 2018. McGregor denied raping her and said the sex was consensual. After prosecutors declined to bring criminal charges, Hand pursued a civil claim. In November 2024, a High Court jury found McGregor liable for assault and awarded her €250,000 in damages, as reported by the Associated Press and The Irish Times.
News coverage often describes the matter as a civil rape case because the dispute concerned Hand’s allegation that McGregor raped her. The jury’s legal finding, however, was civil liability for assault. It was not a criminal trial or a criminal conviction.
Why the Court of Appeal rejected McGregor’s arguments
McGregor challenged several aspects of the trial. The Irish Times reported that the appeal included arguments about whether the jury’s question should have used the words “sexually assaulted” rather than “assaulted,” and about the treatment of his no-comment responses to investigating Gardaí.

The jury’s question
The appeal court rejected the challenge to the wording of the jury question. Appeal judge Brian O’Moore described the trial judge’s direction as “brutally clear.” The Irish Times reported O’Moore as saying the case was “all about sexual assault or, as the trial judge said on numerous occasions, whether or not Mr McGregor raped Ms Hand.”
No-comment evidence
The court acknowledged an error in the trial judge’s analysis of the no-comment evidence. It nevertheless concluded that the jury had been properly warned and that McGregor had not shown prejudice or a real risk of an unfair trial. The appeal court therefore rejected this ground as well. McGregor’s side withdrew an application to introduce fresh evidence before the appeal hearing. The appeal court dismissed all of his grounds. It also separately dismissed James Lawrence’s appeal concerning costs after the jury found Lawrence had not assaulted Hand, according to The Irish Times.
Damages, costs and what the ruling means financially
The €250,000 damages award came from the High Court jury in 2024. The Court of Appeal’s July 2025 order additionally entitled Hand to costs at both court levels. Before the appeal ruling, The Irish Times described the High Court legal costs as an estimate of €1.3 million. That was an estimate, not a final confirmed bill or payment amount; the appeal court’s order does not establish a final costs accounting.

What happened after the Court of Appeal ruling
In December 2025, RTÉ reported that the Supreme Court would not allow McGregor a further appeal. That update means the reported route to another appeal was refused. The available reporting does not establish later enforcement steps or a final accounting of costs.
