Dave Chappelle later narrowed his comparison of speaking in Saudi Arabia and the United States to his own experience at one performance: “It was for me that night.” Asked by PBS NewsHour interviewer Amna Nawaz why, he replied, “Because the kings said I could say whatever I want.” That is Chappelle’s explanation of one evening—not evidence that expression is broadly freer in Saudi Arabia.
What did Chappelle say?
In a 2026 PBS NewsHour interview, Amna Nawaz asked Chappelle about a remark he had made to an audience in Saudi Arabia the previous year: “You told an audience in Saudi Arabia last year it’s easier to talk there than it is in the U.S. right now. Is that true? You feel that?”
Chappelle answered, “It was for me that night.” When Nawaz asked why, he said, “Because the kings said I could say whatever I want.” The exchange places the remark in the context of his own performance and his perception of what he could say there.
Chappelle also acknowledged the criticism of his decision to perform in Saudi Arabia: “And I know I got a lot of criticism.” He described his intent and the transaction this way: “It’s like, I go there with good intentions. I do what I do and they pay me well for it. That’s the extent of it.”

What does “for me that night” clarify?
It limits the scope of the comparison. Chappelle was describing his experience as a performer at a particular event, not making a substantiated claim about the rights of everyone in Saudi Arabia or the United States. His statement about what “the kings” told him is his account; the interview does not establish what legal protections applied, what restrictions the event had, or whether other performers could speak just as freely.
A comedian being able to deliver a set is not, by itself, a measure of how safely people can criticize authorities, organize, or express dissent across a country. Those are broader questions involving people with different positions and different exposure to consequences.

Amnesty International’s 2025/26 country report says Saudi authorities continued to severely restrict freedom of expression and association. It describes critics and human-rights defenders facing long prison terms, unfair trials, and travel bans. That country-level account concerns a wider range of people and circumstances than Chappelle’s account of one performance.
In a separate report published February 5, 2025, Amnesty said it had documented 85 people prosecuted in Saudi Arabia since 2013 solely for exercising rights to freedom of expression, association, or peaceful assembly. Amnesty said it believed the actual number was likely higher. The figure is Amnesty’s documented count through January 2025, not a count of all such cases.
