Coleman became known to many viewers through Audrie & Daisy, but her public work also included supporting survivors and efforts to prevent gender-based violence. The Associated Press report published by CBS News identified Coleman’s connection to SafeBAE, a survivor-support and prevention organization. Her mother, Melinda Coleman, announced her death in a Facebook post, writing, “She was my best friend and amazing daughter.” The words were shared in the context of a family’s grief, not as an explanation of why Daisy died. What is Audrie & Daisy about?
The 2016 Netflix documentary follows Coleman and Audrie Pott, examining the effects of sexual crimes and online bullying on the two young women and on their families, friends, schools, and communities. Directors Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk’s film premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, according to Netflix’s Media Center.

The Associated Press also reported background on Coleman’s 2012 assault allegation and the subsequent legal case. Its account says Matthew Barnett pleaded guilty in 2014 to misdemeanor child endangerment and received probation and a suspended jail term; prosecutors did not pursue a rape charge.
