Dakota Johnson has described tattoos as something she once loved but now finds inconvenient when acting roles require them to be covered. The meanings that are clearly documented are more limited: she has spoken about a shared phrase from Aldous Huxley’s Island, and Vogue reported that she chose “tender” because it is her favorite word.
What Dakota Johnson has said about her tattoos
In Vogue’s 2015 profile, Johnson recalled, “I went through a phase where I loved tattoos, and I loved the feeling of getting tattooed.” She added, “But now I’ve outgrown them mostly, and [because] I always have to cover them for jobs, God, they’re annoying!” Her comments describe a change in how she feels about tattoos and the practical burden of covering them for acting work; they do not amount to a complete account of her designs or their meanings.
Johnson has also singled out one phrase she still loves: “Lightly my darling,” which she shares with her half-sister Stella Banderas. Vogue traced the wording to Aldous Huxley’s novel Island.

A tattoo sometimes confused with Johnson’s
Vogue’s 2017 profile also mentions a “hush” tattoo on the knuckles, but it belongs to Johnson’s mother, Melanie Griffith—not Johnson. The article says Dr. Woo tattooed it for Griffith. Vogue, 2017.
