Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Spoilers for the ending of Duel (1971): David Mann lures the pursuing tanker truck toward a cliff, jumps from his car at the last moment, and watches the truck plunge over the edge and break apart. The film resolves the chase, but never identifies the truck’s driver or explains why he targeted Mann.
What happens in the final scene of Duel?
Mann uses the road and the truck’s momentum to set up a final collision. As the tanker bears down on his car near a cliff, he gets out and jumps clear. The truck cannot stop in time: it goes over the edge and is destroyed below. Mann survives.
The ending does not show the truck exploding. Its drawn-out destruction, as it crashes and breaks apart, brings the pursuit to a close without revealing who was behind the wheel.
Who is driving the truck, and why is he chasing Mann?
The film keeps the driver’s identity and motive unknown. Neither the crash nor the final moments provide an explanation, so the ending should not be read as confirming a name, a reason for the pursuit, or what happens to the driver after the crash. Amblin’s film page likewise describes Mann as targeted by a killer in an 18-wheeler without identifying him.

Why does the truck’s destruction feel like the defeat of a monster?
That is an interpretation of the scene’s visual effect, not an explanation the film gives for the chase. The truck dominates the action as a largely unknowable threat; its slow, physical breakdown gives the machine the feel of a defeated monster. The film’s ambiguity remains intact even after Mann escapes.
Did Spielberg want the truck to explode?
Steven Spielberg later recalled that ABC asked him to return and add an explosion. In a report on his remarks at the 2022 TCM Classic Film Festival, he described wanting instead to end with the wreckage dying slowly, including oil dripping and a tire slowing down. He said the requested Duel explosion was never made, and joked that it was used in 1941. That account is Spielberg’s recollection as reported, not a full transcript or an independently verified production record. Read the report on Spielberg’s TCM remarks.
