“Trade War TikTok” was an April 2025 wave of videos in which people presenting themselves as Chinese factory workers or direct manufacturers claimed they could supply goods resembling luxury-brand products for much less. DHgate, a wholesale marketplace, became a place viewers were pointed toward—but the videos did not establish that the sellers shown made products for the luxury brands they named.
What was “Trade War TikTok,” and why did DHgate enter the conversation?
In April 2025, TikTok videos circulated amid heightened U.S.–China trade tensions. Their creators presented themselves as factory workers or direct manufacturers and promoted the idea that shoppers could buy goods resembling luxury-brand products straight from Chinese sellers. DHgate appeared in the conversation as a marketplace where viewers might look for such items. The Washington Post covered the trend on April 15, 2025, describing both the appeal of buying direct and the risks. The Washington Post’s report is a contemporaneous account, not verification of the sellers’ identities or supply chains.
The pitch connected several ideas: that luxury prices include large markups, that Chinese factories make goods for Western brands, and that shoppers could bypass intermediaries by ordering from those factories. Those were claims made in videos, not established facts about any particular listing, factory, or brand. A low price or a creator’s factory footage does not by itself show who made an item or whether a luxury company sourced from that seller.
Did the videos prove that luxury brands use the sellers shown?
No. The existence of a video, a factory setting, or a product that resembles a branded design does not independently authenticate a creator’s identity, establish a supplier relationship, or prove that an item is genuine. Contemporaneous coverage cautioned that some assertions were false or unsupported. The videos should be understood as promotional claims unless independently corroborated.

A 2025 report by France’s NORMA described “Trade War TikTok” as videos by people presenting themselves as direct manufacturers of Western luxury brands and characterized the campaign as information manipulation involving counterfeiters. That is the report’s assessment of the trend; it does not verify every creator, seller, or brand claim. NORMA’s report should not be read as proof that each video was coordinated or that every named seller was involved in counterfeiting.
Cybernews likewise reported that the trend coincided with heightened trade tensions, while noting no concrete evidence linking the videos to a coordinated Chinese government effort. Its account supports describing the timing and the uncertainty—not asserting state coordination as fact.

Does buying direct reliably save money or avoid import costs?
Not necessarily. The Washington Post warned that shoppers should not assume a direct purchase will be cheaper after all costs or escape tariffs. A marketplace listing’s price is not the full landed cost: the final amount can depend on shipping, applicable import charges, and the specific shipment. The April 2025 tariff figures reported during the trend are historical figures, not a reliable statement of rates today.
Buying through a marketplace or an unfamiliar seller can also mean less certainty about seller identity and product provenance, alongside potential losses in quality control, customer support, and recourse if something goes wrong. Those are risks highlighted in the 2025 coverage, not results of a product test. Sky Canaves, principal retail and e-commerce analyst at eMarketer, put the caution plainly: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

What changed in the later de minimis policy?
A later policy update is distinct from the April 2025 trend coverage. In an executive order dated February 20, 2026, the White House said duty-free de minimis treatment would not apply to covered shipments regardless of value, country of origin, or mode of transportation; the order stated that the changes would take effect February 24, 2026. Read the White House order.
This describes the order’s stated policy, not the total duty owed on a particular purchase. The applicable amount and liability can depend on other rules and the details of the goods and shipment. For an item-specific estimate, consult current U.S. Customs and Border Protection guidance rather than applying a tariff figure from April 2025 or assuming a marketplace purchase is exempt.
