There is free Dungeons & Dragons monster content, but it is not the complete Monster Manual. Wizards of the Coast’s current free rules reference is the System Reference Document (SRD) v5.2.1, which includes selected rules and monster stat blocks. Its 5.2 update added 17 monsters; the 2024 Monster Manual remains the much broader book.
What D&D monster content is free?
The free resource is the D&D System Reference Document, or SRD. D&D Beyond identifies the current downloadable version as SRD v5.2.1, published May 1, 2025. It provides rules content that creators can reference and use to publish compatible material under Creative Commons.

Wizards announced in May 2024 that the planned SRD 5.2 would update the existing document to reflect the revised core rules, including selected Monster Manual content. The SRD is a reference for core rules—not a free copy of a paid book—and Wizards said it would not include lore references.
Which monsters were added?
The current SRD FAQ lists 17 monsters added in SRD 5.2. Examples include the Bugbear Stalker, Goblin Boss, Swarm of Crawling Claws, Troll Limb and Vampire Familiar. The SRD includes monster names and stat blocks, with an appendix explaining conversions from 5e to 5.5e equivalents.

Those additions are part of a selected rules reference, not a complete bestiary. Some familiar material is excluded: the official FAQ names the Beholder as one example and explains that the SRD is intended to support original work, not reproduce every part of the D&D brand or setting.
How does the free SRD compare with the 2024 Monster Manual?

The figures for the Monster Manual are from Wizards’ official product listing. The two resources serve different purposes: the SRD is a rules foundation for reference and creation, while the book is the more extensive monster collection.

What can creators do with SRD material?
SRD v5.2 is offered under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC-BY-4.0). The license permits compatible content, including commercial publishing, with attribution. It does not grant blanket permission to use all D&D trademarks, setting lore or excluded monsters. Creators should review the official SRD page and FAQ and the applicable license for their project. Wizards identifies DMsGuild as a separate route for publishing material set in Forgotten Realms and other D&D settings.

Use the official D&D Beyond SRD page to access the current v5.2.1 download and licensing information. Check that page for the version and license terms relevant to your use; the SRD is not a substitute for the full Monster Manual if you want its broader collection of monsters.
